Dr.

Phillp Payne, Superintendent

Coral Springs High School, District 123

Dear Dr. Payne,

Enclosed is a Budget Proposal for the 2019-2020 school year for the Concert Band
Program at Coral Springs High School. This music program is a fundamental part of developing
students' minds, bodies, and abilities, and so we have developed a budget that reflects the
importance of our students and keeps in mind the needs of our developing program.

With this upcoming school year, we are looking to acquire more instruments and content
rich literature for our ever growing band. We hope to expand our music library and instrument
inventory by 3% within the next five years. As well as replace and repair any equipment within
the music classroom that is in need of attention. By achieving these goals, we can create a
more efficient and desirable classroom for our band students.

The following document displays the budget for the upcoming school year. The first
section of the document brings up the predicted expenses and income for the year, while the
next section covers the details of every budget item. Finally, additional reasons over each
budget item is included and given the necessity of the costs.

With the fast growing Band Program here at Coral Springs High School, it's important to
recognize that we are an integral part of the arts education. By having multiple ensembles of
different functions, we show the diversity of our program and the many functions that it serves.
The marching and pep bands are great representatives of both our school and our music
program at community and sporting events, while our concert bands showcase quality music in
addition to our students' musical growth. With this budget, our program can proceed to grow
and improve, and provide even more musical opportunities as well as quality education.

Sincerely,

Willie and da Katz

Support Information
Bussing to Festival
Bussing to festival is important because we need to make sure everybody gets there at the right
time, and at the same time. Having parents take students to festivals would get tricky between
traffic, knowing where your students are, pick up and drop off points, as well as creating a sense
of unity as you would with an athletic team. Additionally, you would need other adults to meet
the students at those drop off points which would derail them from their already assigned duties
that the chaperones would already have.

Festival Fees
Festivals are an important part of the school year in the band and choirs. These can include
state large group festivals and solo and ensemble festivals. It is important for the band to cover
these expenses every year so that students have the opportunity to participate in these events.
Both state large group and solo and ensemble give students the opportunity to perform a variety
of literature and receive feedback from experts in the field.

New Trumpets
After reviewing the instrument inventory, there are no trumpets listed in the complete inventory.
While the trumpet is a reasonably affordable instrument, there may be a few families who
cannot afford to rent or buy this instrument for their student. It is important for our program to
have at least two trumpets in our inventory to provide for these students. These can also be
used when a trumpet is in the shop so that the student can still participate in class. The
trumpets that were chosen were intermediate models, which would be good for an upper middle
school or high school student.

Instrument Cleanings/Adjustment
The reason for instrument cleaning and adjustment is that our students need working
instruments. If an instrument isn’t working correctly, then they are not able to play effectively.
Cleaning of instruments, you can SOMETIMES trust your students to know how to clean their
instruments, but there are other aspects of cleaning that a professional should do. Pad
Cleaning, Rod adjustments, valve maintenance, and any soldering that needs checked or fixed
should all be done by a professional, and that’s why we send out these instruments.

Printing Concert Programs

Concert programs are key to providing information to audience members. They allow the
audience to read about the pieces that are being played, list all of the members participating in
the ensemble, and can help communicate upcoming events. They’re also a great tool for
documentation and record keeping. For each concert, the band should cover this expense so
that everyone has access to this information.

Drum Heads
We spend money on drum heads so that our students are playing on the best possible
instruments, with the best possible sound. The reason behind prioritizing the snares, both
marching and concert, along with the bass drum heads are because those instruments are
played most often. Those instruments are also the instruments that students don’t necessarily
know how to take care of them well, so until you instill those process of this is how we take care
of them, this is how we play them correctly, this is how we tune them and how often, then you
will have to have extra heads on hand for when they break. If the students are playing on
broken heads, then their sound isn’t going to be the right sound.

Concert Music Library Pieces/Expansion

It's always important to expand the repertoire in a music library so as to give an ensemble more
literature to learn and choose from. Another benefit to growing the library, is being able to loan
and share with other ensembles in and outside the school. For this year, the library added
Cloudburst by Eric Whitcare and Good Night, My Heart by Dan Forrest. The reasoning behind
this is that the current library doesn't hold any of these two composers' works and both are well
known modern day composers. As important it is to learn classical literature, it's also wise to
llook to the future and invest in newly produced music by current day composers.

Marching Band
● Show Music: Untold by Alex Thode- Show music in general is needed in order to
perform a marching show. Marching music must have the balance of being complex
enough to display technical and musical skills while being simple enough for performers
move to. Untold accomplishes these feats while also being content rich in it’s merging of
the old and new; a reimagining and repurposing of works by Beethoven, as well as
material by James Dooley. While this show is a large investment, it is a set of content
rich material fit for a competitive program that we have.

● Drill Writer - A drill writer designs all of the drill that will be used for our marching band
shows. By hiring a drill writer, we are getting drill writing from a professional who will
invest a great amount of time to making sure that our show is great. This also allows the
directors to focus on other areas of teaching in marching band, such as designing music
and marching rehearsals, handling administrative tasks, and preparing students for a
successful season. While this is a big investment for our program, it is one of the best
investments that we make all year.

● Drumline Tech-If the band director is not a percussionist, and is not confident in their
abilities to help the drumline, then the drumline is missing out on valuable information
that can enhance and build technique. Even if it’s a college student that helps in their
free time for free, it does help out the band director to not have their attention split any
more ways than necessary. If you hire a Drumline tech and decide to pay them, it’s
going to take the drumline to the next level and your students are going to be better
musicians because of that additional knowledge that another percussionist can provide.

● Colorguard Coach - Color guard is a very specialized field in marching band and it is
important to have an experienced professional as a coach. The colorguard coach will
design choreography, host camps, cover costumes and makeup, and keep the entire
group organized and focused. Because many band directors don’t have experience with
colorguard and need to focus on teaching the drill and music to the musicians, it is
incredibly important to have colorguard coach on the field. This will best benefit the
colorguard members and the band as a whole.

Awards
Awards are a means of rewarding student achievement. These awards are not only a nice token
for those who have worked hard all season, but also a symbol as to that they have contributed
greatly to the program as well as been an inspiration for others. They are a symbol of
accomplishment representing hard work, servitude, setting a standard of excellence, and being
an inspiration for others.
