PT3 Writing

Part 1
[20 marks]
You should spend about 25 minutes in this part.

Read the message from your sister.

Jennifer,

I would like to buy a present for mom. Can you please give me some advice? Should I buy
her a watch, a purse or a bouquet of flowers? You may have other suggestions that I should
consider so do please leave me a message before you go to work so I can buy the present
today.

Melissa

In about 80 words, write a message to your sister Melissa about your suggestion.

Suggested sample answers:

Dear Melissa,

Thanks for reminding me about mom’s birthday. I would advise you not to spend too much
money because it is the thought that counts. I think you should buy her a purse because it is
not as expensive as a watch. Flowers are also unsuitable because they will not last long.
The purse she is using now is a little worn out and I am sure she will be happy to have a new
one. See you at dinner!

Thanks for reminding me about mom’s birthday. I would advise you not to spend too much
money because it is the thought that counts. A watch or a handbag will cost a lot of money
and I think flowers are unsuitable because they will not last long. Why don’t you buy a
cookbook for her because she likes to try out new recipes? She enjoys Indian food so
maybe you can buy her a curry cookbook. See you at dinner!

From,
Jennifer

PT3 SPEAKING: Part 3 3 minutes

Interlocutor Now, I’d like you to talk about something together for about two minutes. I’m
going to describe a situation to you.

I’d like you to imagine your school is organising a Talent Competition

and you need to think about what activity you would like to take part in.

Place Candidate booklet, open at Part 3, in front of the candidates.

Here are some activities that you could join. First you have some time to look
at the task.
Allow candidates 15 seconds to look at the task.

Now, talk together about the different activities you could present during
the Talent competition and say which one would you most like to do.

Okay, are you ready? Please start.

Candidates ………………………………………………………………………
1-2 mins Back-up prompts to be used if necessary:
What do you think [candidate name]? How about you [candidate name]?
What about this [pointing to option]? Do you agree [candidate name]?

Candidate A: What would you like to present during the Talent Competition?
Candidate B: I think that I am too shy to give a speech or sing a song. Besides, I don’t
think I have the courage to do it by myself.
Candidate A: Yes, me too. I think it is better if we present something as a group. Then
we will not be so nervous. Maybe we should present a short drama but it
takes a long time to prepare for this. What do you suggest?
Candidate B: I agree with you that a drama is quite difficult to prepare. Maybe we
could sing a song as a choir so that there will be a group of us and our
voices can be louder if we sing together.
Candidate A: That’s a great idea. Perhaps we can start with reciting a poem as a
group and then finish with singing a song so we can get more marks for
our talent and creativity.
Candidate B: What a wonderful idea! I agree that we can do two activities in one so
that we can ‘wow’ the judges and have a good chance at winning this
Talent Competition.

Interlocutor Thank you. That is the end of the test.

(Can I have the booklet, please?) Retrieve Candidate booklet.
