Homophones: Blue Is A Nice Color, But I Like Red. Blue Is Also The Way I Feel, Unhappy
Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spellings and
meanings. Just like in Spanish, homophones occur in English because there are
multiple ways to spell the same sound. For example, the schwa sound // causes
words like complement and compliment to be pronounced alike. However, it is
important to note that regional accents can affect whether the words are homophones
or not.
The following is a list of common homophones (arranged in alphabetical order) that can
be used as a study aid for spelling, reading and vocabulary.
Look up the meaning of unknown words from the list to enrich your vocabulary.
Expand this list by adding new items that you may consider can act like
homophones (you may check a dictionary for the phonetic transcription), and
feel free to share it with the rest of the class.
Use the pairs of homophones separately or altogether to write isolated
sentences, poems, tongue twisters, etc. This will help you grasp differences in
meaning.
Rearrange the words using graphic organizers and/or pictures for reference.
