Course Contents

Unit-I Matrices 10 Hrs.

Rank of a matrix; Normal form; Consistency of the system of linear equations; Lin-
ear dependence and independence of vectors; Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix;
Cayley-Hamilton theorem and its applications. Reduction to diagonal form; Reduction of
a quadratic form to canonical form, congruent transformation.

Unit-II Multivariable Calculus (Differentiation) and its


applications 10 Hrs.
Limit, continuity and partial Derivative, Euler’s theorem and generalization; partial deriva-
tives of composite functions, total derivative, Jacobians; maxima and minima of functions
of two variables, Lagrange’s method of multipliers.

Unit-III First order ordinary differential Equations & it’s


applications 10 Hrs.
Introduction to ordinary differential equations, Exact differential equation, equation re-
ducible to exact differential equation, Linear differential equation, Bernoulli’s differential
equations, applications to simple electrical circuit, applications to heat flow, rectilinear mo-
tion.

Unit-IV Higher order linear differential equations 10 Hrs.


Higher order linear differential equations with constant coefficients; Solution of L.D.E. us-
ing General method, Short-cut method, Variation of parameter method, Cauchy’s & Leg-
endre’s differential equations

Unit-V Numerical Solution of ordinary differential equa-


tion 10 Hrs.
Introduction, solution by Taylor’s series method, Euler’s method, Modified Euler’s method,
Picard’s method, Runge-Kutta method of forth order.
