What’s the purpose of an art journal?

An art journal (or visual diary) is a record of your creative processes

and written evidence of your work.
I like to call it ‘Creative Consistency’ because it not only supports you
and your artistic progress but it also supports your creativity!

So, what should I put in my

visual art journal?

There are many ways to document your creative processes here are some great
examples

• 1. Record your ideas

• 2. Step by Step Guide of processes (the more detail the more helpful it will be
for future artworks)

• 3. Explanation of the thinking behind an idea.

• 3. Analyse the success of a technique, idea or composition. (Discuss what worked

and what did not work and what you would do differently) You could explain how
a particular artist or designer's style, or technique has influenced your work.

• 4. Reflections- on art videos and learning outcomes

• 5. Keep your drafts/ rough sketches/ even the things you think aren’t that great
(this includes leftover pieces of paper of a colour/or a texture you like or
something you may not have liked at all so you can avoid the process next time)
