Function and general features 00 – 10/03/18

1.0 Function, features, assembly and operation

This specification concerns the function, the main features and the assembly and operation of the
terminal box Type SM2-S/M16CEG. Environmental and operating conditions depend generally
from the compatibility of the materials and components and from the surface finish.

2.0 Function
The terminal box Type SM2-S/M16CEG is designed to allow the grounding of parts inside the tank
of medium and high power, oil-cooled, oil-insulated electric transformers – for instance core and
frame - to an earthing pole outside the tank. The terminal box Type SM2-S/M16CEG also allows to
measure the insulation of the grounded parts.

3.0 Construction features

The terminal box Type SM2-S/M16CEG consist of a flanged casing, closed by a cover. In the bot-
tom of the casing two terminals size M16 are mounted in such a way as to be at the same time in-
sulated from the casing and oil tight. The M16 terminals are identified on both ends as T1 and T2,
in order to allow a fault proof branching, and are connected by grounding strips to one or two earth-
ing connections inside the casing; the earthing connections exit the casing so as to allow to con-
nect the M16 terminals to the earthing pole outside the tank.
3.1.0 General features
 Flanged casing with lowered bottom to prevent air pockets; the casing has one or two earthing
connections size M12, passing from the inside to the outside of the casing. The casing is
closed by a cover; protection degree of the box is IP 65; identification labels inside and outside
the box allow identification of terminal box;
 The two M16 terminals are oil tight and electrically insulated from the casing and are identified
on both ends as T1 and T2; the M16 terminals are electrically connected by grounding strips
either separately to one of the two M12 earthing connections or to the same M12 earthing
connection when only one M12 connection is requested;
 The casing itself has an internal and external M6 earthing point.
3.2.0 Materials and finish
 Casing and cover of aluminium casting, painted with one coat of epoxy primer and one finish-
ing coat of polyurethane paint, colour RAL 7031; the epoxy primer is compatible with mineral
transformer oil at a temperature of up to 120°C, the paint passes the 500 hour salt fog test;
 The M16 terminals are made of copper and the earthing connections are brass
 External screws and washers of stainless steel;
3.3.0 Operating conditions
Materials, components and design allow the terminal box Type SM2-S/M16CEG to be used in the
following conditions:
 Environmental temperature with standard gaskets - 20°C to + 50°C
 Relative humidity 95% at 20°C; 80% at 40°C; 50% at 50°C
 Protection degree of box IP 65
 Operating temperature (mineral oil) -20°C to +110°C
Special executions can be supplied for following environmental conditions and operating tempera-
tures:

 Environmental temperature - 60°C to + 55°C

 Operating temperature (mineral oil) -60°C to +130°C
 Relative humidity 60% at 55°C
3.4.0 Test
Following tests and controls are performed on boxes before despatch:
 Tightness of the M16 terminals;
 Insulation of the M16 terminals at 3 000 V for 1 min;
 Control of correct numbering of M16 terminals.

4.0 Assembly and operation

It is advisable to prepare a wiring plan before assembling, showing the identification of the M16
terminals and the corresponding part inside the tank.
Terminal box Type SM2-S/M16CEG is then mounted on the transformer tank as follows:
 Connect the earthing cables inside the tank to one end of the M16 terminals;
 The terminal box is then bolted to the tank; the flange O-Ring gasket assures oil-tightness;
 Connect the M12 earthing connections to the earthing pole outside the tank.
To measure the insulation of the grounded parts open the cover of the terminal box, disconnect the
grounding strips and measure the insulation between the earth part and the earthing pole.
Close the cover of the terminal box.
