Compulsory military service: pros and cons

Compulsory military service exists already for a very long time. No doubt that it is
often discussed yet rarely understood. The following essay takes a look at both sides
of the argument.
First of all, it is worth considering that military is not only about weapons. It is also
about people who go through challenges together. One can find friends for a lifetime
who will be there in any circumstances. On top of that, being in such a place makes
you go on the path of self-development. You not only become a tidy, punctual and
strong person, but as well you learn how to think in critical situations and value what
you have. Last but not least, soldiers are given tangible rewards. They get salary and
other conveniences, such as food, free health care services and other social
guarantees.
On the other hand, if it is compulsory, it can distract from reaching goals. For
instance, if you had your own plans, they will be postponed or even canceled because
of military service. Later on it can be really hard to continue doing what you have
started before this. In addition, your life is put at risk, so you never even know how it
will end. What is more, not everyone is suitable for the army. One can be mentally
and physically not prepared for it, so as a result, his mental health can be damaged
afterwards.
Taking everything into account, there are both advantages and disadvantages in
conscription. In the end we can not really change the existence of it, but it is up to the
individual to decide whether his opinion about the compulsory military service is
positive or negative.
