It was all about social science theories of implication by Herbert Spencer And This

article began by reviewing some recent reinterpretations of the sociological work of

Spencer which have substantially helped to retrieve his reputation by clarifying its

central ideas, emphasizing his own interpretation of the social organism and idea of the

social self-consciousness of individuals. The narrative explained the overall structure

and theoretical cohesion of Spencer's sociological thought, and then how he came to

apply it to professionals and work in general. Spencer stressed that through their

specialization, privileged “acquaintance with the nature of things” and skill, and

“cunning,” professionals introduced more flexibility, more cooperation, and more space

for innovation into social life.

It then covered Spencer's more detailed understanding of “professional institutions”

in his Principles of Sociology, complemented by material from other sources.
