Consider there is a jeweler who has two bars of gold alloy in stock one of 12 carats and
other of 18 carats. Here 24 carat is pure gold, 12 carat is 17/24 pure and 18 carat is 18/24
pure and so on.

The objective is to find how may grams of each alloy must be mixed to obtain 10 grams
of 14 carat gold.

Now one can assume 12 carat of gold as x and 18 carat of gold as y .

Thus, total grams is as x  y  10 .
Further another equation formed is as 12 x  18 y  14 10  140 .

Further equations 1 is multiplied with -12 and the add both as:

12 x  12 y  120
12 x  18 y  140
6 y  20
10
y
3

Thus, 18 carat of gold is as 10/3 grams.

Further 12 carat of gold is computed as:

x  y  10
10
x   10
3
10
x  10 
3
20
x
3

Thus, the grams of each alloy must be mixed to obtain 10 grams of 14 carat gold is as
20 10
x grams, y  grams
3 3 .
