About the Course: The scope of the Virtual Refresher Course is to provide basic and working knowledge on the materials
characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, TEM, TGA-DTA, Particle size, Nitrogen adsorption
isotherms, BET surface area analysis, data analysis, and the interpretation of results. During this workshop, you will hear
from eminent industry experts and professors from the esteemed organizations, as they discuss their latest research work on
advanced techniques in material characterization.

Prof. Arun M. Umarji
Dr. Arun M. Umarji, Professor (Retired) – IISc, Bangalore, obtained his M.Sc in Physical chemistry
from Karnataka University Dharwad and Ph.D from IIT Madras in 1980. Post- Doctoral positions at
Argonne National Laboratory USA during1981 to 1984 and TIFR in Mumbai during (1985-1987). He
was the Chairman and professor of the Material Research center IISc Bangalore. He was a visiting
faculty member (1997- 98) at the Ceramics and Materials Eng. Department, Rutgers University, Piscataway NJ-
USA. He was the vice president of ICS, Bangalore chapter during 2010-2012. He has obtained Malaviya Award-
2013 and Material Research Society of India (MRSI) medal in 1996. Currently, he is working on Design and
development of Zirconia powders for dental applications, supported by Dental and Health care,and Nano-structured
and composite silicides for thermoelectric power generation, funded by IFCPAR.

Mr. Padmanabhan Govindarao

Dr. Vijai Shankar Balachandran is a Materials characterization expert with 8+ year’s experience in
Electron, optical microscopy & micro-spectroscopy. Dr. Vijai Shankar Balachandran is a Lead
Scientist at Materials & MicroAnalysis, Advanced Analytical Sciences, Reliance Research and
Development Centre, Navi Mumbai, India.
Dr. Vijai Shankar Balachandran has got American Chemical Society –Postdoctoral Fellowship, The City College
of the City University of New York (CCNY-CUNY), USA 2008-2011 and he has obtained Ph.D in Chemistry from
IIT Madras, Chennai, India. Dr. Vijai Shankar Balachandran has several patents such as US Patent 2018:
Enzymatic degradation of polyester-wool fabric blend, European Patent (2018) Enzyme based blend fabric
preferential degradation and recycling, US Patent 2019: Method for hydrogen free carbon nanotube development,
PCT filed-2019: Method for trimetallic hydrotreating catalyst

Dr. Parminder Singh


Dr. Parminder Singh has a doctorate in molecular biology. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow at
ICGEB Delhi and served as Scientist in various R&D sectors. Later on, he moved to analytical field
and has gathered vast application experience in reputed companies. He holds more than 12 years of
experience in both R&D & industries.
He is a regional trainer for Particle characterization for Anton Paar and is currently working as a Product Line
Manager for particle characterization with Anton Paar India. He has conducted several trainings and seminars for
particle sizing by laser diffraction and dynamic light scattering.

Dr. Sandip Bysakh


Dr. Sandip Bysakh is presently working as ‘Senior Principal Scientist’ at Central Glass and ceramic
Research Institute, Kolkata. He has nearly 25 years of experience involving Transmission Electron
Microscopy (TEM) characterization relating to R&D on wide variety of materials including Metallic,
Ceramic & advanced composite, nanostructured materials and thin films. He has participated in various
collaborative research with several Indian organizations (DRDO, CSIR-Labs, IITs, IISc) & international Institutes.
He has contributed to about 118 scientific papers in peer-reviewed SCI-journals. He started his career in DMRL-
Hyderabad in 2004 before joining CGCRI in 2007. Dr. Sandip Bysakh holds B.Sc. (Tech.) in Ceramic Technology
from College of Ceramic Technology (CCT), Universit of Calcutta, Kolkata. Subsequently, he obtained both his
Master’s degree M.Sc. (Engg) and PhD from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Before starting his research
career in India, Bysakh had been a visiting researcher at the ‘National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS),
Japan during 2002 – 2004. He is a Life Member of Indian Ceramic Society (InCerS), Material Research Society of
India (MRSI) and Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). He is also a Life Member and Fellow of Electron Microscope
Society of India (EMSI). Dr. Bysakh is also associated with academics as Associate Professor of the Academy of
Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) to teach Masters & PhD students, and has jointly supervised to
complete three PhD thesis.

Dr. Ganapati V. Shanbhag


Dr. Ganapati V. Shanbhag is presently working as Associate Professor and HOD, Materials Science
and Catalysis Division Poornaprajna Institute of Scientific Research Bengaluru. Dr. Ganapati V.
Shanbhag has completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry-Heterogeneous Catalysis from CSIR-National
Chemical Laboratory, Pune.. 2008, Dr. Ganapati V. Shanbhag has also Worked as Research Associate
at ICI India Ltd (MNC), Mumbai, India.. 2000-2001 and ResearchScientist at Dept. of Chemistry, Korea Advanced
Institute of Science and technology (KAIST), Daejeon, South Korea…2008-2010. Dr. Ganapati V. Shanbhag has
Published 47 research papers in internationally reputed journals (H-Index 22), Two US patents (granted), 3 Book
chaptersin the area of heterogeneous catalysis and is also a reviewer for reputed international peer reviewed
journals and resource person for several Faculty Development Programmes, Refresher and TEQIP programmes for
degree and engineering college lecturers and researchscholars across Karnataka.

Dr. Nisha Singhania


Dr. Nisha Singhania is presently working in Thermax Limited, Pune, India as Senior Scientist, Centre
of Excellence- Material Science (CoE-MS), Research Technology Innovation Centre. Dr. Nisha
Singhania is one of the Innovative, strategic, resourceful, results oriented material scientist with 10
years of experience in research and development of cost-effective synthesis of nanomaterials and their
application in energy and environment sector. Science enthusiast who believes in material to application approach,
and solution to global concerns in an impactful manner. Dr. Nisha Singhania has completed her PhD from Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore, India on Oxidation of CO Catalyzed by Mono and Bi- Noble Metals, on Various
Oxide Supports.

Dr. Anuradha M. Ashok


Dr. Anuradha M. Ashok is presently working as Associate Professor, Functional Materials
Laboratory, PSG Institute of Advanced Studies, Coimbator. Dr. Anuradha M. Ashok has completed
M.Sc in Materials Science, Mangalore University, Karnataka, 1995, Ph.D in Physics, University of
Oslo (UiO), Norway, 2008. Dr. Anuradha M. Ashok is working on Complex oxides for clean energy
applications such as Solid oxide Fuel cells, thermoelectrics, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, solar
photovoltaics, transparent conductors, and also onTransmission Electron Microscopy crystallography structural
analysis, analysis of structure-property relationships. Dr. Anuradha M. Ashok has 35 Publications In peer-reviewed
international journals and one Book chapter.

Dr. Nagesh S. Kini


Dr. Nagesh S. Kini is one of the Co-Founder and CTO of Vimano EWA Pvt. Ltd, bangalore. Dr.
Nagesh S. Kini has obtained Ph.D.(Materials Science) with two decades of rich experience in
Academic research and Industrial R&D. Established state-of-the-art materials characterisation
laboratories starting from scratch. Developed new products in new technology areas. Successfully
executed industrial R&D projects on cost-reduction, quality improvement and efficiency-enhancement. Collaborated with
reputed research institutes across the country (IIT, IISc, DRDO Labs) and abroad by conceiving and executing research
projects. Evaluated technologies in renewable energy domain, identified partners for Transfer-of-Technology (ToT) and
successfully executed technology-transfer collaborations. Trained in ISRO (VSSC) on Li-ion cell manufacturing. Recipient of
international research fellowships from prestigious institutes from Japan (JSPS), Germany (Max Planck Institute) and South
Korea (SNU). Recognised Ph.D. guide at the Dept. of Technology, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). Currently
working in an Advanced Materials Innovation startup that is disrupting electrochemical devices for Energy Storage and HT
Fuel Cell systems with a long-tail into Social Impact.
