MEMORANDUM

TO: INTERESTED PARTIES

FROM: NICOLE McCLESKEY
DATE: OCTOBER 6, 2020
RE: TEXAS CD 23 SURVEY KEY FINDINGS

KEY FINDINGS
The race for Texas’ 23rd District remains a dead heat. Despite the massive spending advantage for Gina
Ortiz Jones, Tony Gonzales is down just a single point – 41% Gonzales/42% Jones.

 Importantly, voters like what they see in Tony Gonzales. Among the 56% of voters who have
heard of both candidates, Gonzales goes ahead by ten points – 50%-40%. And among the 42%
who have an opinion of both candidates the Gonzales advantage expands to 57%-36%.

 Gonzales also leads by a 36%-32% margin among Independent voters.

The information flow in the race also favors Gonzales. Jones and her allies have spent a massive
amount in the race to date, but still are not having their desired impact. Based on what voters are
hearing in the campaign, 27% are more favorable to Gonzales and 13% less favorable (+14 information
flow). Gina Jones’ information flow is 27% more favorable and 20% less favorable (+7 information flow).

BOTTOM LINE
Tony Gonzales has weathered an avalanche of spending and remains right on the heels of Gina Jones.
Voters are clearly responding to Gonzales in a much more positive way. With sufficient resources,
Gonzales has the ability to win this race against a candidate ill-suited for the district.

METHODOLOGY
On behalf of the Gonzales for Congress, Public Opinion Strategies conducted a telephone survey of 400
voters in Texas’ 23rd Congressional District. Fifty percent (50%) of the interviews were conducted by cell
phone and 17% of the interviews were conducted in Spanish. The survey was conducted October 3-5,
2020 and has a margin of error of +4.9%.
