members of the Maasim Women for Council managed to grow a Backyard
farming of turmeric as part of the regular activity to augment the raw materials of
their Turmeric Powder Project. Turmeric(Curcuma longa), locally known as
“Luyang dilaw” is a fairly common root crop easily grow in a backyard area. Its
bright yellow color are commonly used as food additives and also demonstrated
turmeric properties based on research studies.

Presently, PO members started to produce turmeric powder and the distributed

only in the local market. This women led group enterprise aims to expand their
enterprise into different variety of Turmeric product, improvement of product
packaging, access to market outlet, technical capability assistance of PO
members and infrastructure support.

This turmeric enterprise for women would generate additional income of the
family especially most of their husband are only earning minimal income as
marginalized fishermen in the municipality of Maasim located within the
Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape. The production of Turmeric tea is done
whole year round because the raw material is present in all season. However,

growing of turmeric root crops. In this case, given the full blown operation of this

biodiversity conservation of the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape.
