Lesson 3 Topic: Reflect on the definition of global citizenship and the policies you

identified that impact the community you are researching. What moves you? How can
one person impact the lives of many? What do the people you researched this week have
in common? What assumptions did the activists make about the people they were
helping?

Journal Entry (or link):
When it comes to the definition of a global citizen, I really pictured someone like Malala

Yousafzai. A global citizen cares about how everyone is affected, not just their community or

their village. Malala stands for quality education for all people, not just women, or children, but

for everyone (Yousafzai, 2014). The one thing that really hit was when she said she could either

die and stay silent or she could die and speak up (Yousafzai, 2014). It is truly commendable that

she could face her death and still stand up for what she believes in. Not a lot of people can keep

that courage in such dire circumstances.

I chose the No Child Left Behind policy to focus on because it affects every community.

Those that created this policy had good intentions and wanted a fair education for all, but it

forced teachers to teach to the test and the real education was lost. My global citizen definition

lead me to choose a national policy because I wanted to think bigger just like Malala.

The one thing that moves me is my passion for education and making a better system for

everyone. There are many different types of learners and everyone deserves to be taught in a way

they can learn and grow. Any person can impact another just like a single family member can

impact the entire family system. The thing that Malala and Kid President have in common are

that they want people to do better and provide a better world for us to live in. Kid President made

an assumption that we need to change the world and is bothered about people going hungry and

homelessness. These are issues, yes, but I don’t think we need to change the world, but rather
help it get better. There are so many beautiful aspects about life and if they were shared more

positivity in the media rather than the terrible things, we would all have a brighter outlook on

life. I think a lot has to do with looking inward first, like Kid President (2013) said, “it’s one

person filled with love…. filling another person with love.” I am getting my degree in

educational studies so I can join this fight to spread positivity, fun, and love back into education

and make students fall in love with learning.
