1. You are provided with the metre rule, a complete retort stand, a 500ml beaker with full of
4
a given liquid, a 100g and 50g masses and three pieces of threads.
Proceed as follows:
(a) Balance the metre rule horizontally by suspending it from the stand and clamp with one of the
threads as shown in figure 1 below.
Record the balance point G.
G = …… cm mark.
(b) Suspend the 100g mass from the metre rule at a point such that x = 5cm from point with the 100g
mass completely immersed in liquid L in the beaker, hang the 50g mass from the metre rule and
adjust its position until the system is in equilibrium as shown in the diagram below.
Note the point of suspension P of the mass.
P =……cm

(c) Repeat the procedures for values of x = 5cm, 10cm, 15cm and 25cm
Questions
(i) Prepare a table of results including the values x, position of 50g mass and y.
(ii) Plot the graph of y against x.
(iii) Determine the gradient G of the graph.

2. The aim of this experiment is to determine the refractive index of the glass block by tracing rays
of light through the block.
Proceed as follows.
(a) Place the rectangular glass block on the plain paper (stuck on the soft board) and trace it
round.
(b) Remove the block and draw a normal line at point O and an incident ray at 15 degrees as
shown in the figure 2 below.

Figure 2
(c) Stick two pins P and Q along the incident ray and replace the glass block while closing one
eye, look through the glass block from the opposite side and insert two other pins S and R
exactly in line with the images of P and Q.
(d) Remove the glass block and join SR to the outline of the block to the outline of the block.
Hence obtain the refracted ray inside the glass as shown in the diagram above.
(e) With O as the Centre, draw a circle of radius 5cm to cut both the incident ray and the
refracted ray at L and M respectively.
(f) Using a set square, draw the perpendiculars LN and MN and measure their length in
millimeters (mm) to the normal.
(g) Repeat the above steps for angles of incidence of 300 , 450 , 600and 750.
Questions
Sini
(i) Tabulate your results including i ,r , ln , MN , Sini , Sinr and
Sinr
(ii) Plot the graph of LN against MN.
(iii) Calculate the slope of your graph.
Sini
(iv) Calculate the average value of
Sinr
Note: The papers used for drawing should be attached and collected together with
answer booklets. (25marks)
