 QWERTY was designed to slow you down

There are actually two theories to this. The first one starts to make sense when you
look at manual typewriters. If someone typed too fast, the keys would jam. QWERTY
placed common alphabets at a distance from each other and slowed typists down.

Another theory is that telegraph operators designed the QWERTY layout because it
was easier (and faster) to decipher Morse code.

Either way, there was no reason to keep using the layout, but it stuck and there was
resistance to change.

 The first alarm clock was designed for one person and could only go
off at 4am – when they had to get up and get ready for work. An
adjustable alarm clock was not created for another 60 years.

 When Helium is cooled to almost absolute zero (-460°F

or -273°C), the lowest temperature possible, it becomes
a liquid with surprising properties: it flows against gravity
and will start running up and over the lip of a glass
container!
 Polar bears are nearly undetectable by infrared cameras

Polar bears keep warm due to a thick layer of blubber under the skin.
Thermal cameras detect the heat lost by a subject as infrared, but polar bears are
experts at conserving heat. The bears keep warm due to a thick layer of blubber
under the skin. Add to this a dense fur coat and they can endure the chilliest Arctic
day.

 A flea can accelerate faster than the Space Shuttle

A jumping flea reaches dizzying heights of about eight centimetres (three inches) in a
millisecond. Acceleration is the change in speed of an object over time, often
measured in ‘g’s, with one g equal to the acceleration caused by gravity on Earth (9.8
metres/32.2 feet per square second). Fleas experience 100 g, while the Space Shuttle
peaked at around 5 g. The flea’s secret is a stretchy rubber-like protein which allows
it to store and release energy like a spring
