Conclusion/Results and Discussion

This paper set out to investigate the consequences of bullying in terms of school

absenteeism in senior high schools in Ghana. The research results are shown by

gender and different models were estimated for frequency of bullying and type of

bullying exposure. As mention by Shahria (2015) that bullying is deemed as a serious

problem in academic settings in all parts of the world. They found that bullying has

negative impact on academic performance. Females were more affected than males by

bullying. The researcher estimated that boys who were bullied for one to two days had

1.7 times higher odds of school absenteeism than boys who were not bullied and Girls

who were bullied for one to two days had 1.8 times higher odds of school absenteeism

than girls who were not bullied. As expected, the researcher found that being bullied

was associated with a higher likelihood of school absenteeism for boys and girls. When

the bullying occurred more than twice in 30 days, Boys who were bullied for three to

nine days had 2.5 and the girls who were bullied for three to nine days had 2.1 times

higher odds of school absenteeism. Boys and girls who were physically or

psychologically bullied were almost twice as likely to miss school as those who were not

bullied. For boys the effect of emotional problems on school absenteeism was similar

whether they were bullied or not. For girls, there remains a distinction between being

lonely, sad or anxious at school.

Bullying really has a negative impact on an academic performance or on the

attendance of a student. In addition, Konishi (2010) found that school bullying really

affects negatively in academic achievement of student. This seems feasible given the

research evidence from studies that show the normalisation of violence, against girls in
particular, within the daily school environment. From my own perspective, bullying can

really affect the school performance of a student, according to Rose & Monda-Amaya

(2011) that bullying is perceived as serious problem in schools in these days. Bullying

can affect the emotional and mental health of a person, according to Alison (2016) that

bullying is considered as global problem that affect emotional, social, and physical

wellbeing of school-age children worldwide. There is a need in psychological wellness

of individual suffering from bullying that is why there is a need in conducting qualitative

study to further broaden the body of knowledge.

There are some possible solutions that can help reduce the bullying problem. If

you feel the person is a bully or bullied, you’ll want to make sure they’re able to talk to

you about it honestly and won’t have to feel pressured or as though they have to hide

anything.  This can be achieved by talking to them about bullying, educating them to

look out for and understand the signs, as well as making sure they feel comfortable

talking to you about it. If they feel like being mean to someone else, they should have

the ability to move away from the situation and by treating others with kindness and

respect, adults must show the kids or a person in their lives that there is no place for

bullying. Therefore, if we, as a society, need to grow and develop, then we must work

together to discourage the act of bullying and thus make our mankind feel safe.
