Vibration of Floating Structures

Autumn 2020 NA31007 3-1-0, 4 credits

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tutorial #1
Free Vibration of 1DOF system
1) 1. Idealize and find out the natural frequency of the bar shown below

2) A one degree of freedom model of 9 m steel flagpole is that of a beam is fixed at one end and free at other
end. The flagpole has an outer diameter of 5 cm and inner diameter of 4 cm.

a. Approximate the natural frequency of transverse vibration.

b. Approximate the natural frequency of torsional vibration.

(𝜌 = 7400𝑘𝑔 ⁄𝑚 3 , 𝐸 = 200 × 109 𝑁 ⁄𝑚 2 , 𝐺 = 80 × 109 𝑁/𝑚2)

3) Consider a SDOF system having mass 2 kg, stiffness 50 N/m, damping 10 Ns/m. Find the followings;
(a) Undamped natural frequency
(b) Critical damping and damping ratio
(c) Damped natural frequency, Logarithmic decrement, Amplitude ratio of any two consecutive cycles

4) Consider a single DOF system, of mass m kg, damping ratio ζ, stiffness k N/m.
Put m = last two digits of your roll number, k = the three digits of your hostel room number, ζ = 0, 0.02, 1, 1.2.

MATLAB: Given the following initial conditions, plot the displacement, velocity, and acceleration as
functions of time, for all damping ratios. Draw the phase plane (displacement vs. velocity/frequency).
𝑑𝑥(0)
(a) 𝑥 (0) = 1, =0
𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝑥(0)
(b) 𝑥 (0) = 0, 𝑑𝑡
= −1
𝑑𝑥(0)
(c) 𝑥 (0) = −0.5, 𝑑𝑡
=1

Calculate the energy loss due to damping in each case.

Now consider the damping to be unknown. If the amplitude becomes 10% of itself from nth to (n+k)th cycle,
what is the damping ratio? Plot the corresponding time series (MATLAB).
(a) n = 2, k = 3.
(b) n = 10, k = 6.
