2. SERIES
All of the examples below can be located in an appropriate section of the book.
P P P
(1) Provide an example of two series ak and bk that both diverge, but (ak − bk ) converges.

Sigma a sub k = Sigma 1/k, Sigma b sub k = Sigma (1/k + 2/k^2)

1/k - 1/k - 2/k^2 = -Sigma 2/k^2 which converges.
P∞
(2) P
Provide an example of a series k=1 ak such that the partial sums Sn are bounded but the series

k=1 ak diverges.

Sigma (-1)^k is divergent

S1 = -1, S2 = 0, S3 = -1 -> bounded
P∞ P∞ 1
(3) Provide an example of a geometric series k=0 rk such that k=0 rk 6= 1−r

Sigma 3^k => 3^k =/= -1/2

P P
(4) Provide an example of a series ak such that ak diverges but limk→∞ ak = 0

Sigma (1/k), diverges but the limit 1/k as k -> inf is 0.

1 k 1 k 1 k
P∞
, ∞
 P  P∞
(5) Compute k=0 2 k=0 3
, and k=0 6

First series can be rewritten as 1/(1-1/2) = 2

Second series can be rewritten as 1/(1-1/3) = 3/2
Third series can be rewritten as 1/(1-1/6) = 6/5
