Effective Net Area

Shear lag occurs when the tension forces is not transferred


simultaneously to all elements of the cross-section. This will occur
when some elements of the cross-section are not connected. For
example see the figure below. Where only one leg of an angle is
bolted to the plate.

Effective Net Area

The AISC Steel Manual introduces the concept of effective net area to
account for shear lag effects.
For bolted connections: Ae = UAn
For welded connections: Ae = UAg
The rules for determining U fall into the following table
