State Liable to Compensate for Death of Manual Scavengers

It is the duty of the state to prevent manual scavenging and is liable to compensate
manual scavengers losing their life during manual scavenging because the state failed to
stop manual scavenging, ruled Madras High Court.

The PIL filed in the case cited the judgement of the Supreme Court in Safai Karamchari
Andolan and Others vs. Union of India and Others, which directed the practice of manual
scavenging to be closed.

Kerala High court praise Health Workers

The Kerala High Court praised the efforts of the State Health Department in containing
the outbreak of Nipah virus, while also appreciating the central government in
providing timely assistance for the same.

Nipah Virus (NiV) causes severe diseases in both animals and humans and has already
taken few lives on Kerala. he natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae
Family, Pteropus genus.

The first outbreak of disease took place in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. On
this occasion, pigs were the intermediate hosts.

Rahul Gandhi to face defamation Trial

Congress President Rahul Gandhi will now face trial for Defamation after he pleaded not
guilty on a complaint filed against him by an RSS worker for his remarks blaming RSS
for assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi had made the comments during an election rally in Bhiwandi,
Maharashtra in the year 2014.

Waqf Tribunal has no Supervisory Jurisdiction over Waqf Boards

The Calcutta High Court ruled that Waqf tribunal has no jurisdiction to pass any
direction upon the Waqf Board to dispose of any pending application before it.

The bench said that the High Court is the only court which, by its supervisory
jurisdiction which it enjoys under Articles 226 of the Constitution of India over the
Courts and Tribunals subordinate to it, can entertain such petitions and pass directions.

ICC orders release of  Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo

The International Criminal Court has decided to release the former vice president of
Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo.

While Bemba' conviction for crimes against the administration of justice still stands, the
court found it improper to detain him when he already served most of the maximum
sentence.
