INTRODUCTION

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS)

Occupational safety and health (OSH) also commonly referred to as occupational health
and safety (OHS) or workplace health and safety (WHS) is an area concerned with
the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. The goals of occupational
safety and health programs include fostering a safe and healthy work environment. OHS may also
protect co-workers, family members, employers, customers, and many others who might be
affected by the workplace environment. In the United States the term occupational health and
safety is referred to as occupational health and occupational and non-occupational safety and
includes safety for activities outside work.
Occupational safety and health can be important for moral, legal, and financial reasons. In
common-law jurisdictions, employers have a common law duty (reflecting an underlying moral
obligation) to take reasonable care for the safety of their employees, Statute law may build upon
this to impose additional general duties, introduce specific duties and create government bodies
with powers to regulate workplace safety issues: details of this will vary from jurisdiction to
jurisdiction. Good OSH practices can also reduce employee injury and illness related costs, including
medical care, sick leave and disability benefit costs.

The following are the occupational health and safety in computer laboratory

1. Do not work alone so that there's someone who can

take care of you in case of emergency.

2. Always power off the computer and unplug the computer

before working on it.

3. Take away any liquid near your working area to avoid getting
electrocuted or accidentally damaging computer parts.

4. Use the right tool in the right job .Be careful with tools
that may cause short circuits.

5. Always ground or discharge yourself before touching

any part of the computer.
6. Do not use excessive force if things don't quite slip into
place.

7. Clean the area before and after using it to maintain

sanitation and prevent accidents.

8. Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the

Integrated Circuit (IC) parts.

9. Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in

accordance with the organization's OHS procedures and
practices.

10. Make sure that the pins are properly

aligned when connecting a cable
connector.

11. Contingency measures during workplace accidents,

fire and other emergencies are recognized.

12. Use a brush, compressed air or blower in

cleaning the computer system.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is an important factor in your safety

when working in the laboratory. PPE, such as gloves, safety glasses and lab coats,
supplements your laboratory’s safety equipment and established experimental
protocols. With this in mind, the University issued a PPE Policy that requires the
Principal Investigator, or his/her designee, to regularly assess PPE needs and
ensure PPE is provided and properly used in the laboratory. EHS has created a
tool to assist laboratory personnel with the implementation of the Policy. See the
related section on Lab Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the online lab PPE
assessment tool, policy and other supporting documents.

Personal Protective Equipment includes:

 Safety Precautions
 Preventive Maintenance
 Protective Devices
 Accident Reports
Safety precautions
Proper preparation is the key to a successful built. Before you begin, make sure
that you have the tool you will need, and secure a clear well-lit workplace. Gather
all the components you’ll be using and unpack them at the same time. Find a dry,
well-ventilated place to do your work, you should choose an area without carpets,
because it tends to create static electricity. Always keep in mind that personal
protection is one of the traits of a good technician.
Preventive Maintenance
Maintenance is keeping something in working order. It includes repair,
testing, adjusting, and replacing parts of a computer or a peripheral.

Types of Preventive Maintenance

 Active
 Passive

Active – this is carried out before problems develop in a computer unit.

Passive – this is carried after problems have developed in the computer unit.

Personal Protective Devices

Anti-Static Devices
Power Surge Protector Devices

Anti-Static devices
These are the devices used to protect computer units from electro static
discharge.
 Anti-static Wrist Strap

 Anti-static Mat
 Anti-static Bag

Power Surge Protector Devices

An appliance designed to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. A surge
protector attempts to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either
blocking or by shorting to ground voltages above a safe threshold.

 Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR)

 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

Do ‘ s

· Keep the Working Area clean. (To ensure smooth working on a given task)
· Remove unnecessary things/tools that are not related to work specification.
(To keep organized during the task given.)
· Wear anti-static wrist trap in handling CPU Components. (To prevent static
electric sensitive parts or components of the CPU.)
· Wear a thick rubber sole shoe.

Don’ts
· Don’t open the CPU without unplugging or terminating the electric from the power
source.
· Don’t remove the processor from the motherboard if not necessary. It may damage
the processor, if it is needed make sure that it is handled properly and placed in
proper container.
