The Shanghai Composite Index is the most common indicator of the exchange as well as the
benchmark index of the Chinese stock market. It was launched in July 1995 with a base value of
100. The index climbed to an all-time high of 6,214 points on October 16, 2007, and ended 2008
down a record 65% following the global financial crisis. The index ended 2012 up 3.17% to
2,269 points.
As of the end of 2015, 954 companies were listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange with a market
capital capitalization of $2.31 trillion, the sixth largest in the world;
