Food and Waterborne Diseases Summary
3A Report
GOAL
• Reduce the diarrheal morbidity from 1,997 to less than 1,000
cases per 100,000 population and mortality rates from 6.7 to
less than 3/100,000 population by year 2003.
This goal will be achieved through the following (OBJECTIVES?):
1. To formulate policies and guidelines for the prevention or control
and case management of FWBD
2. To devise strategies to disseminate appropriate information on the
practice of good personal hygiene
3. To establish FWBD surveillance system to guide program planning,
decision making, and policy formulation
4. To upgrade referral hospital laboratory capabilities on
identification of etiological agents FWBD
5. To coordinate/collaborate with the different DOH services and
other government and non-government agencies in program
implementation
Components and Strategies (DOH, 2017)
1. Information Dissemination which will focus on personal hygiene
safe food preparation, storage and handling, and environmental
sanitation
2. FWBD Surveillance System will be composed of community-based
and laboratory-based surveillance
3. Clinical Care will focus on case management FWBD with emphasis
on ORESOL (ORT) and rational use of diagnostic tests for FWBD
4. Training on local program implementation to include surveillance,
outbreak investigation, case management, and laboratory skills
5. Research/Special Studies related to FWBDs
6. Monitory and Evaluation to provide program direction
Strategy 1.
• Food Safety Act of 2013 (RA No. 10611) - “An Act to Strengthen the
Food Safety Regulatory System in the Country to Protect Consumer
Health and Facilitate Market Access of Local Foods and Food
Products, and for Other Purposes.”
• Provision of Potable Water Program (SALINTUBIG Program –
Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig Para sa Lahat)
• ISO 22000:2005 ISO 22000:2005 specifies requirements for a food
safety management system where an organization in the food chain
needs to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards in
order to ensure that food is safe at the time of human consumption.
