First Semester 2019-2020

Mid-Semester Test
(EC-2 Regular)

Course No. : MBA ZG531/QM ZG531

Course Title : Statistical Quality Control
Nature of Exam : Closed Book
Weightage : 30%
No. of Pages = 2
Duration : 2 Hours
No. of Questions = 5
Date of Exam : ________________
Note to Students:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

1. Select a specific product or service, and discuss how the eight dimensions of quality impact its
overall acceptance by consumers. [5]
2. A new design of glass bottles is being investigated for use by a soft-drink beverage bottler. The
internal pressure strength of the bottle is an important quality characteristic. It is known that the
standard deviation of strength is 3 psi for the bottle manufacturing process for each design. From
a random sample of 16 bottles from each design, the mean pressure strengths are observed to be
175.8 psi for old design and 181.3 psi for the new design. The company will not use bottle design
2 unless its pressure strength exceeds that of bottle design 1 by at least 5 psi as otherwise, it is not
justified to invest in the new handling equipment for the new design. Based on the sample data,
should they use bottle design 2 at significance level  =0.05. [5]
3. The tensile strength of a metal part is normally distributed with mean 40 lb and standard
deviation 5 lb. If 50,000 parts are produced, how many would you expect to fail to meet a
minimum specification limit of 35 lb tensile strength? How many would have a tensile strength in
excess of 48 lb? [5]
4. The cooling system in a nuclear submarine consists of an assembly pipe through which a coolant
is circulated. Specifications require that weld strength must meet or exceed 150 psi. Suppose the
designers decide to test the hypothesis H0:  =150 Versus H1:  >150. A random sample of 20
welds results in x-bar =153.7 psi and s=11.5psi. What conclusions can you draw about the
hypothesis? Use α =0.01. [5]
5. The diameter of cotter pins produced by an automatic machine is a characteristic of interest.
Based on historical data, the process average diameter is 15 mm with a process standard deviation
of 0.8 mm. If samples of size 4 are randomly selected from the process:
(a) Find the 3  control limits for the average diameter and state what is the probability of a false
alarm?
(b) If the process mean shifts to 14.5 mm, what is the probability of not detecting this shift on the
first sample plotted after the shift? What is the ARL?
(c) What is the probability of failing to detect the shift by the second sample plotted after the
shift? [2+6+2=10]
