EAS 207 STATICS Fall 2020

HW # 2
Due on Wednesday, Sep. 16 by 10 pm (EST)
Q.1) (a) Write each of the four forces shown below in vector form using Cartesian
representation.
(b) Determine the resultant force vector FR of these four forces.
(c) Calculate the magnitude of the resultant force vector and the angles (α
and β) it makes with x and y axes.

Q.2) A patient’s leg is elevated by two cables as shown below. Determine:

(a) the magnitude and orientation of the resultant force vector at A using the
Parallelogram method.
(b) the x and y components of the resultant force vector.
(c) the t and n components of the resultant force vector.

Q.3) Bead B is attached to a cable BD and positioned halfway between the ends
A and C of a rigid cylindrical bar AC. The tension in the cable BD is 100 N.
Determine; (a) the components of the cable tension that act parallel and
perpendicular to the bar AC. (b) the angle between the cable BD and bar AC.

Q.4) (a) Draw free-body diagrams of the cylinder and members AB and BC shown
in Fig. 4(a). Consider weight of the cylinder as W, but ignore the weight of
members AB and CD. Show the directions of all forces acting on each
free-body.
(b) Draw free-body diagrams of members ABCD and CEF of the frame shown
in Fig. 4(b). Show the directions of all forces acting on each free-body.
Ignore the weight of members.
