Task Sheet Title: Changing Infant Diaper Steps
TITLE:
Changing Infant Diaper
STEPS
1. Assemble equipment.
2. Prepare a new diaper and place the back half under the baby(still on the old diaper).
3. Remove the soiled diaper by unfastening the tabs sticking them back so that they will not stick
either on the baby or the new diaper.
4. Pull down the front half of the dirty diaper. If there is fecal material in the diaper, use the front half
of the diaper to wipe the bulk of it off the baby’s bottom.
5. Lift the baby off the table holding onto the ankles and fold the old diaper under him. This protects
the new diaper from the baby’s bottom.
6. Using a soft moist cloth, clean the baby’s front. If the baby pooped, be sure to clean his bottom
well especially inside the skin folds. For a baby girl, move the damp cloth by passing it from front to
back to avoid contaminating the perianal area.
7. Remove the dirty diaper and set it aside. Pull the front half of the clean diaper up to the baby’s
abdomen. For a boy be sure to point the penis down so he is likely to pee over the top of the diaper.
8. Spread evenly and wide the material in between legs. Bulking of the diaper around this part causes
skin irritation and chaffing that are both uncomfortable to the baby.
9. Secure the diaper in place by fastening the tabs. Dress the baby appropriately and comfortably.
10. Wash your hands.
