What do you mean
by international
Social Work???
The word international mostly indicates something (a
company, language or organization) involving more than a
single country. The term international as a word means
involvement of, interaction between or encompassing more
than one nation, or generally beyond national boundaries.
For example, international language which is a language
spoken by residents of more than one country.
Basically, Social work is a professional problem solving process.
It is a helping activity which deals with the problematic and
disadvantages people to recover from their problem to make them
capable. Many social scholars try to define the term social work.
Such as;

According to Walter A. Friedlander – “Social work is a


professional service, based upon scientific knowledge and skill in
human relations, which assists individuals, alone or groups to
obtain social and personal satisfaction and independence.”
To define the international social work, Walter A.
Friedlander said, “International social work is a youngest
branch of social welfare activities. It is based upon the
recognition that international cooperation in social welfare
is needed in this period of wide spread global concern in
order to assure the well-being, social and economic security,
and good health of human beings every where. This is
indispensable before world peace and stability can be
secured.”
According to NASW,
“International social
work deals with
universal problems
experienced by
people around the
world.”
Values and Beliefs of International Social Work
Value makes any actions more standard than the other one
and can able to differentiate from one to another. To ensure the
peaceful correlation over the world international social work
maintains some values and beliefs. Some core values and beliefs
of international social work is cited below:

1. Assisting Self-
help Group: It’s one
of the core values
and beliefs of ISW to
assist self-help
groups who are
directed the actions
in rurally, nationally
or internationally..

2.Enhancing Social and Human Resources
Development: It’s possible to ensure the development in
society by removing the serious problems, violence,
human afflictions, decadences and ISW helps to ensure it.

3. Assuring peaceful correlation: ISW helps to ensure
the peaceful correlation by eliminating the religious
violence and race riot.

4. Strengthening of Social bond: ISW try to find
out the social bond among the people throughout
the world from different views.

5. Social Justice: In the present world it is
remarked that social anomy and social injustice in
every where. To ensure the social justice for all ISW
plays an important role.

6. Developing the standard of life by assuring
human rights: Human rights nowadays at a stake.
Improved countries trying to impose their social,
economic, political policies to the developing and
under developed countries which are barriers of
human rights.

7. Making people self-confident: Every people has
his own latent talent. ISW helps to make capable by
solving the problems of problematic person and
make people more self-confident.
Functions of International Social Work

ISW is gaining considerable recognition in the world


today. Social workers are practicing in various countries
on all continents. It has many functions for bringing the
welfare of a society. According to NASW some core
functions are:
1. Peace and Social
Justice: Peace and
social justice is
considered as an
emergence need for
the welfare of the
world right now.

2. Global Health and Gender Equity: Nowadays
global health and gender equity turns as an alarming issue.
Global health and gender equity can be issued area.

3. Women’s Right and Refugee Resettlement: ISW can
play an important and necessary role to establish women’s
right and resettle the refugees.

4. Foreign assistance and psychological support:
In the 3rd world countries foreign assistance is highly needed
and all over the world psychological support is must.

Some more functions are often discussed
besides these. Such as;
1. Child Rights and Protection;
2. Formulating policies and regulations;

Moreover, in every country there are


many govt. and non-govt. organization are
working for the welfare of society. Such as;
RSS, UCD, BRDB, ILO, UNICEF, UNESCO etc.
