Availability of High Voltage

semiconductors made it possible to go
for HVDC. (Earlier, dc power was used but
limitation of low voltage dc system made ac
system popular)
Technical need for Dc transmission
pushed for HVDC development. (In AC
system problems in reactive power
losses, stability, cables charging current
and connecting systems with different
frequencies)

HVDC

Advantages
1. No charging current,
2. Require les space compared to AC System,
3. Asynchronous operation possible,
4. Less corona loss and radio interference,
5. No transmission of short circuit fault,
6. Cheaper in long distance,
7. No stability problem.

HVDC

Disadvantages
1. High cost of converter stations,
2. Transformers cannot be used to alter voltage levels,
3. Harmonics generated by the converter stations
need to be filtered out,
4. Requirement of reactive power by the converter
stations and
5. Complex controls of DC transmission.

HVDC Types
Monopolar Configuration
Two converter stations that are separated from
each other are connected by a single conductor
and earth (or sea) is used as a return conductor.

HVDC Types
Bipolar Configuration
A bipolar HVDC configuration consists of two combined
monopolar HVDC systems, one at positive and one at
negative polarity with respect to ground.

Function of HVDC components
• Converter transformers used to couple the converter
equipment to the ac network. Normally the converter
transformers are provided without load tap-changing
• The converter it self which is used to convert AC to DC
(rectifier) at one end and to invert DC to AC (inverter) at the
other end. The converter is associated with control
equipment, which is part of the converter.
• Filters at each side of the transmission which are used to
limit the harmonic
• Dc reactor it in used to obtain smooth currents. We
normally use two transformers at each side of the HVDC
which are connected Y/Y and /Y
