ASSESSMENT TASK

1. What is the first and broadest definition of nanomaterials?

The first and broadest definition of nanomaterials states that, the size of these
materials’ individual building blocks are less than 100 nm (a very small scale), at
least in one dimension (nm; equivalent to the diameter of approximately 500 atoms).

2. What is the difference between nanotechnology and conventional technology.

The difference between nanotechnology and conventional technologies is

that their approach. “Bottom-up” ” (atoms or molecules are  used as the building
blocks to produce nanoparticles, nanotubes, or nanorods, or thin films  or layered
structures) approach highly favored the nanotechnology while the “top-
down”(starting  from  large  pieces  of  material  and  producing  the  expected
structure by mechanical or chemical methods) approach was used in conventional
technologies.

3. Briefly discuss the formation of nanorods, nanoplates and carbon nanotubes.

In the formation of nanorods and nanoplates, it is always

consider the surface energy especially for anisotropic (noncubic)
structures. However in active molecules it is possible to grow rods or
plates even from isotropic materials. The other way of obtaining
nanorods  and  nanotubes in relation to layered structures is through
building crystal structure from layers and held together with van der
Waals  forces  rather  than  by  electrostatic  attraction. It has a
schematical arrangement of crystallized particle. And all compounds
that are crystallize in layered structure has the tendency to form a
nanotubes

4. Illustrate two of the most important fullerene (C60 and C70).

5. Briefly discuss the properties and applications of nanomaterials (fullerenes,

carbon nanotubes, and graphene.
