ISU MODULE

(Module no. 1)
Subject: CE 80 – Water Resources Engineering

1. Title of the Module

Chapter 1:
Water Resources Engineering
The Hydrologic Cycle
The water code of the Philippines

2. Introduction
We shall start our lesson by simply defining Water Resources Engineering.

3. Learning Outcome
Upon successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
 Define and Know Water Resources Engineering
 Know the basics of Hydrologic Cycle
 Know the purpose of water code of the Philippines

4. Learning Content
Chapter 1 :

Water resources are origin of water that are essentially required by humans, and
water is basically used for agriculture, industry, domestic purposes, and environmental
events.

Water resources engineering is the study and management of equipment,

facilities and techniques that are used to manage and preserve life’s most plentiful resource.
In addition to assessing how and the best ways in which to control water as it pertains to
water-related activities – such as irrigation, waste disposal and canal development – water
resource engineers are also frequently involved in water management to ensure that it’s safe
to drink both for humans, plants and animal usage.

Hydrology (from Greek: ὕδωρ, "hýdōr" meaning "water" and λόγος, "lógos" meaning
"study") is the scientific study of the movement, distribution, and management of water on Earth and
other planets, including the water cycle, water resources, and environmental watershed sustainability.

A practitioner of hydrology is called a hydrologist. Hydrologists are scientists

studying earth or environmental science, civil or environmental engineering, and physical
geography. Using various analytical methods and scientific techniques, they collect and analyze data
to help solve water related problems such as environmental preservation, natural disasters, and water
management.
What is Water Cycle?

Water cycle, also called hydrologic cycle, is the cycle that involves the continuous circulation
of water in the Earth-atmosphere system. Of the many processes involved in the water cycle, the
most important are evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, and runoff. Although the
total amount of water within the cycle remains essentially constant, its distribution among the various
processes is continually changing.

5. Teaching and Learning Activities

1. In your own knowledge and words, illustrate and discuss briefly the water cycle
process.(with illustration if possible)

6. Recommended learning materials and resources for supplementary reading.
