Article of the Day
costly and cumbersome to generate
Terahertz (THz) waves fall between microwave and infrared can generate extremely high‐power signals in just
radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum, oscillating at a few picoseconds, or one trillionth of a second, ‐‐
frequencies of between 100 billion and 30 trillion cycles per which produces high‐power THz waves
second. These waves are prized for their distinctive properties:
they can penetrate paper, clothing, wood and walls, as well as
detect air pollution. THz sources could revolutionize security
and medical imaging systems. What's more, their ability to
carry vast quantities of data could hold the key to faster
wireless communications.
THz waves are a type of non‐ionizing radiation, meaning they
pose no risk to human health.

What did we learn in the last lecture?
SJSU, EE124‐01 SPRING 2020, HIU YUNG WONG 5
High Frequency Model of MOSFET
MOSFET Capacitance Analysis is complicated.
We only need to know the capacitance in saturation (Why?)
Draw the carrier distribution:
Btw, what is body/well/bulk?

MOSFET HF Model
If not mentioned, assume Body is grounded (DC 0V or VDD) in EE124. But in reality, not always.
SJSU, EE124‐01 SPRING 2020, HIU YUNG WONG 7
Exercise
Identify all capacitances and simplify

Transit Frequency fT of transistor
Transit/cut‐off frequency: small‐signal current gain falls to 1
A measure of how fast a transistor is
Draw the relevant capacitance but ignore CGD

Frequency Response of CS stage
Now we combine bias capacitors (important for low
frequency, short for high frequency) and MOSFET intrinsic
capacitors together (open for low frequency, important for
Chapter 11 high frequency)
Frequency Response
Our goal is to plot the Bode plot of the amplifier

About Mid‐term
The format of mid‐term is similar to mid‐term 1 but
1. online
2. it will be broken down into many small steps. You need to enter only the final answer for each
step. There will be no partial score for the steps (and it is no need because each step bears only
a few points).
3. You can have your own draft paper. Not need to submit. However, I encourage you to take
photos on them within 5 mins after the exam and keep the time stamps. This is just in case you
failed the submission. Any photos taken 5 mins after the exam will not be accepted.

About Midterm
Those who use LockDown Browser + Webcam
◦ Make sure your Webcam is using
◦ Please go to restroom before the exam
◦ Please show your environment clearly during
environment check
◦ including you have put your cell phone in a distance
◦ The paper on your desk are blank
◦ Show your calculator
◦ If computer hangs and you cannot solve the problem,
please restart your computer
◦ I will send a zoom meeting for you to join. Only join

About Midterm
Those who use Zoom
◦ Make sure your Webcam is using
◦ Please go to restroom before the exam
◦ This is closed book. And you are NOT allowed to use any resources including cell phone. To avoid
cheating, you should not have cell phone and other electronic devices.
◦ You need to turn on your video all the time. Have the video facing you and your workspace. But
don’t show your answer.
◦ You should have minimal use of computer. You need to close all other apps except the browser to
access Canvas. You can only display the exam pdf. After the exam starts, I will request each of you
share your screen in turn to show that you only open the browser. During the exam, I might request
some of you to share randomly.
◦ Whenever I suspect you are not only reading the pdf, I will request you to share the screen
immediately.
