ACTIVITY 6

GEOLOGICAL TIME SCALE

I. Objective
 To understand the concept of geological time scale including eons, eras, epochs, and periods.
 To recognize on a timeline some of the mass extinction that has occurred in Earth’s history.
 Explain how the geologic time scale summarized earth history.

II. Observation:
 I observed that the Geological time scale is the history of the Earth broken down into spans of time
marked by various events and how they evolved help distinguish one era from another.

III. Guide Question:

1. The Earth as an incredible long history. How does understanding of Geologic time and the significant
geologic events of the past impact your understanding of human’s unique responsibility and place on
the Earth?
 The discovery of geologic time revolutionized scientific thinking and led to the development of the
modern Earth sciences. This summarizes the literature describing the difficulties students encounter in
understanding deep time, provides an overview of the historical development and cultural relevance of
deep time, and suggests ways to increase students’ understanding of the significance of geologic time.
All of these processes have existed throughout Earth history, but the processes have become hazardous
only because they negatively affect us as human beings. Important Point – There would be no natural
disasters if it were not for humans. Without humans these are only natural events.

2. How does understanding the past helps us understand the present?

 Studying history can provide us with insight into our cultures of origin as well as cultures with which
we might be less familiar, thereby increasing cross-cultural awareness and understanding. . With
history we can track our origins and compare past patterns. . Looking back into history tells us why we
do things. We should be able to see mistakes made in the past and hopefully we can learn avoid
repeating them while at the same time look and learn in the good things of the past. It’s sort of like the
signs we used to see at railroad crossing that said: “Stop. Look. Listen”
3. Calculate how many generations of human’s it would take for us to exit now. What must human do
exist this long for many generations?
 Since anatomically modern humans first arose about 150 thousand years ago, this is about, 7,500
generations of modern humans. The typical estimates are between 5 and 10 thousand generations
accounting for errors in years per generation estimation and the errors in dating the first anatomically
modern humans. This are the existential threats; (1) ballooning world population growth, self-imposed,
(2) global nuclear war – self-imposed; (3) human-induced global warming self-imposed; (4) killer
asteroids and comets-natural; (5)cyclical long-term natural climate change-natural and (6) eventually a
much hotter sun-natural.

IV. Conclusion:
 The geologic time scale is a way that scientists work to understand the timespan of our planet based on
empirical and fossils-based evidence is then used to try and place events in Earth’s history. Many
things on our planet, such as the formations and mountains, of the draining of lakes by rivers, take a
million of a years. The creation of life in earth and extinction of life in earth extinction has happened
many times over. Scientists have documented at least 5 mass extinctions.
