“Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe.

” – Galileo Galilei

This quote from Galileo Galilei is telling us that the universe was written by God with Mathematics,
implying that everything on it can be read and understood with the use of Math. It might seem funny,
imagining that what your eyes can see are floating numbers but I think this is not what the famous
mathematician meant. Saying that Mathematics is the language of the Universe should not be
understood literally.

What I think he means is that the world can be better understood with the use of Mathematics. For
example, the buildings that we see around us, how it is able to carry so many things and people can be
explained by computing the load of which it is able to support. The fact that we could compute how long
it would take for a person to drive from point A to B, shows us that whatever there is in this world,
mathematics can make us see how it works.

When we say Universe, we tend to imagine the Milky way, the galaxy or the stars. Have you ever
wondered how we were able to know what even is beyond what our eyes can see? In order for us to
know that, we need to look back in time, to where it all began.

Even in the early human tribes, math was already been used to keep track of the solar cycles and
keeping count of their possessions like animals. As humans, we were born to be able to observe patterns
and cycles which is present among things that surrounds us. As years passed, from the simple use of
Math to keep track of how many sheep a family has, it has developed side by side as humans also
developed through history. Because humans have a natural thirst for knowledge, our ancestors have
used mathematics to unlock the mysteries of the universe.

Without mathematics, we would still think that we are living on the only planet. Our ancestors have
opened the opportunity for us to explore the galaxies beyond what our human eyes can see. Truly
mathematics is the language through which the universe can be understood, studied and explored.
