Classroom acoustics are

directly related to student’s

learning and comprehension
• Studies suggests deficient
classroom acoustics effecting
speech intelligibility and
hearing as much as 25
percent

* The best way to solve acoustic

problems is to PREVENT them
before hand, not correct them
Goal:
To limit noise levels,
allowing students and
teachers to be more focus
and productive in class.
“Why must we make
rooms quieter—why
not just make the
teachers’ voices
louder?”
• Teachers
• Students
• Classrooms should have
RTs in the range of 0.8 -
1.2 seconds, but many
classrooms have RTs of
1.5 seconds or more
NRC: Noise Reduction Coefficient
-arithmetic average of the SAC
SAC: Sound Absorption Coefficient
-how much of the sound is absorbed in the actual
material
STC: Sound Transmission Class
-material’s ability to block unwanted airborne sound
(voices, music, etc.) to pass through adjacent spaces

* NRC is oftentimes confused with STC rating

OITC: Outside Inside Transmission Class

• Determines performance of products in relation to
exterior noise
IIC: Impact Insulation Class
• Reduction in structure-borne or impact sound
transferring from a floor surface to the room
underneath
NC: Noise Criteria
• Also an ANSI standard
• Usually pertains to HVAC or
mechanical noise impact

Recommended ANSI levels

NCB Curve
Lecture and 25-30
Classrooms
Background noise sources:
• Through walls from adjacent classrooms
• Noise emanating from hallways
• From outside the building, such as from
aircraft and vehicular traffic from roads
• Noise generated by HVAC
• Presence of too many hard and reflective
surfaces in the room causing excessive
reverberation
• Obtain a proper balance between
direct and reflected sound at the
listening position
• Ceiling is a critical reflective
surface
• The acoustical effect of the wall
panels is to increase the speech
clarity and reduce the
reverberation time
• Absorption materials are used in
audience area while reflective
materials are used in the speaker
or sound source’s area
Solutions to common
background noise source
• Noise emanating from hallways,
outside the building, gaps in doors,
around the frame and under the
door
- windows should be properly
installed, heavily weighted,
double paned and remain
closed when possible to reduce
background noise
- hang acoustically-treated
curtains or draperies in front of
windows to reduce the
proliferation of external noises
• Presence of reflective surfaces
causing excessive reverberation
- Install carpeting in
classrooms to reduce ambient
noises of movement

- Use dense, acoustically

treated doors with rubber or
gasket seals

- Install sound absorbing wall

panels or sound absorbing
concrete masonry units
ECHOES AND STANDING
WAVES CHECKPOINTS
Rectangular rooms, have
large reflective walls which
often create slap echoes and
flutter echoes
ECHOES AND STANDING
WAVES SOLUTIONS
The primary goal is to
minimize parallel, reflective
paths between the surfaces
in your room.
This is best accomplished
with a combination of
diffusive and absorptive
treatments

Product Features

Diffusor reduces narrow reflections and frequency-

dependent modes; eliminates parallel-surface flutter
echoes; includes MLV membrane bass trap
Absorber evenly absorbs frequencies from 200-
20,000kHz
Corner trap reduces low-frequency corner room
modes
Diffusor and Corner Trap act as diaphragmatic low-
mid-frequency absorbers
No fiberglass or foam – uses safe “green” absorbent
lining (recycled cotton)

The Acousti Curtain is a revolutionary new

product. Sound absorbing drapery
primarily designed to absorb more sound
than standard decorative curtains. These
curtains are made with sound
absorbing material and are ideally used
where control of acoustic reflection off of
glass and ambient light control are required.

Super W Pads Reduce Noise, High Frequency Vibration

& Impact From Typical Equipment

Product Specs

Super W Pads should be used in 2″×2″ squares

Pads may be stacked with 16 gauge shims between
layers for increased deflection
Super W Pads are Molded in 3 Elastomers
Standard Natural Rubber for maximum
resilience and vibration isolation.
Neoprene for longer life and moderate oil
resistance. In ¾″thick pads only.
Bridge-Bearing Neoprene for maximum life,
excellent oil resistance and resiliency
approaching natural rubber. Available in
3/4″ thick pads only.
Sizes
Standard 18″×18″ sheets consist of 81 – 2″
squares each supporting 120 pounds
The squares are separated by a thin web
that is easily cut to provide evenly
dimensioned pads such as 2″×2″, 2″×4″,
4″×4″, 6″×8″, etc.
Performance
Super W Pads outperform cork and
rubber “sandwich” pads by giving longer
life and greater resiliency with consistent
and reliable service

• Noise generated by HVAC
- position HVAC system
over hallways or outside
the building
- use low-noise ballast
fluorescent lamps in
classrooms and maintain
and replace lamps regularly
- if HVAC mechanical rooms
are too close to your room,
best solution is to relocate
them; if not possible,
springs and neoprene
isolators can “decouple” the
equipment
