CE501 PLANT VISITS AND SEMINAR FOR CE

REFLECTION ESSAY IN SEMINAR

Discuss briefly how the seminar contributed in your transformation as competent student/ graduate
professional.
Specify its relevance to your program and include a reflection on your attainment of its intended learning
outcome.

Title of the Seminar:

1st EDQ Lecture Series

Name and short background of the resource speaker:

The keynote speaker of this seminar is Engr. Ariel Santos the Vice President of ACIP

Student Outcomes addressed by the seminar:

The students were taught on the basics of designing structures considering seismic loads. Students were also
lectured on the importance of seismic loads and the consequent catastrophes that would ensue should the
codes imposed not be strictly followed by the designated structural engineer

Reflection Essay:

Engr. Ariel Santos of ACIP gave a seminar regarding seismic loads and the concurring shortage of structural
engineers specializing in earthquake. He also noted that many of the failures concerning seismic loads could be
alleviated if only the structural engineer does not neglect what the NSCP states on earthquake loads. He taught
us the basic fundamentals of designing for such event. According to the speaker, the strong column-weak beam
principle as well as watching for joint shear ratios are the ways to ensure ductile failure such calamities are to
occur.

Overall, I think what the speaker said is satisfactory. He expounded on seismic loads and how the safety of the
structure, thereby the lives of the residents living or depending on the structure should be on the hands of the
structural engineer and should not be taken lightly. He encouraged future civil engineers to further read on
related literature, obey the NSCP code, and to design structures that will last for a long time

Title of the Seminar:

Networking with Alumni and the EDQ Lecture Series

Name and short background of the resource speaker:

The keynote speaker of this seminar was Engr. Emilio V. Embile. He specialized in tunnelling and underground
construction. And in the other seminar, there were 4 speakers of TIP alumni. They are Engr. Galupe, Engr.
Castisimo, Engr. Medillo and Ma’am Toling. They all talked about their job and experiences in their workplaces
as project planning and control engineer, geotechnical design engineer, building and facilities engineer and
manufacturing technology respectively.

Student Outcomes addressed by the seminar:

The students were taught different techniques of tunneling and underground construction
The students were made aware of the different fields of civil engineering

Reflection Essay:
The keynote speaker of the EDQ Series was Engr. Emilio V. Embile. He mainly talked about his experiences and
structures he built overseas. He specializes in underground railways and tunneling underground construction.
In other seminars, we were reminded of how broad the field of civil engineering truly is. From structural to
geotechnical to facilities engineer. Civil engineering is undoubtably an important part of society.

Although I did find the keynote speaker’s voice to be not that well-modulated, I think the topics make up for it
well. The different earth-boring techniques one of which is by the use of controlled explosives. To use such a
technique, rigorous calculations are tested just so different factors like the tunnel collapsing in does not occur.
The other lectures were mostly fine, they taught us that we have other options if structural is not the field we so
choose

Title of the Seminar:

General Assembly & Technical Session “Introduction to Bridge Design” and the “Book Launching”

Name and short background of the resource speaker:

Engr. Alberto C. Cañete was the speaker of the “Introduction to Bridge Design” seminar. He is the Vice President
of ASEP and currently a professor to masteral degree in PLM

Student Outcomes addressed by the seminar:

The students are made aware of the type of bridges.
The students are expected to learn the basic of fundamentals in designing bridges.

Reflection Essay:
The keynote speaker Alberto C. Cañete is the current ASEP Vice President and structural consultant for DPWH.
On the first part of the seminar, we were oriented about the fundamentals of bridge design. Bridge design is
important as it is what connects us literally and figuratively. It is the engineer’s duty to ensure the safety passage
of the civilians passing through. The second part of the seminar is the book launching as well as discussing what
the contents of it tackles.

I think Engr. Cañete did a great job in explaining the basics of bridge design. He talked about the different factors
affecting bridge construction and also how to maintain the quality of bridges to increase life span. It inspires me
to further explore the structural field, which is my intended job. The book is also a big help in the furtherance of
my dream

Lifelong Learning Seminar

Name and short background of the resource speaker:

Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz is the current president of TIP

Student Outcomes addressed by the seminar:

The students are informed of TIP’s history and its many achievements
The students are informed of TIP’s ABET accreditation and its benefits

Reflection Essay:
The keynote speaker is none other than the president of TIP herself, Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz. She began the
seminar by telling tales of TIP’s humble beginnings and how she worked night and day to make TIP to be an
acknowledgeable engineering school. She showed us how TIP improved its facilities and how it continues to do
so to this day. By the end of the seminar she urges us to do our very best, not only for the school, but also for us
and our future.

This seminar inspires us to reach the tip of our potential. The president did an exemplary job in inspiring the
students to do so, while sounding amicable. I am encouraged to do my best not only as a student, but also for
my alma mater.
