FINITE AND NON FINITE CLAUSE
Read the dialogue between Vita and Nindy. Answer the following questions.

Nindy : Hi... Vita, are you busy?


Vita : No, what’s up?
Nindy : If you have no activity, let’s go jogging?
Vita : Okay. By the way, why should we do jogging?
Nindy : Jogging is very important, Vit. It gives some benefits to our body.
Vita : Oh yeah... explain to me!
Nindy : Jogging everyday, it increases energy level. Joggging improves both the strength
and efficiency of your cardiovascular system to get the oxygen and nutrients to your
muscles. When your cardiovascular system works better everything seems easier
and you have more energy for the fun stuff in life.
Vita : Oh, I see. What is the other benefit?
Nindy : Jogging also improves muscle strength. Staying active, it keeps muscles and joints
strong, tendon and ligaments flexible, allowing you to move more easily and avoid
injury. Strong muscles and ligaments reduce your risk of joint and lower back pain
by keeping joints in proper alignment. They also improve coordination and balance.
Vita : Wow, it’s amazing. Is there anything else?
Nindy : Yes, Jogging can help you to maintain a healthy weight. Doing more jogging, we
burn more calories. In addition, the more muscle you develop, the higher your
metabolic rate becomes, so you burn more calories even when you’re not
exercising. What is the result? You may lose weight and look better physically whill
boost your self-esteem.
Vita : So, I will be slim if doing jogging everyday, right?
Nindy : Ha....ha... the next benefit is by jogging, it improves brain function. Jogging
increasesblood flow and oxygen levels in the brain. It also encourages the release of
the brain chemical (hormones) that are responsible for the production of cells in the
hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory and learning. This, in turn,
boosts concentration levels and cognitive ability, and helps reduce the risk of
cognitive degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Vita : So the conclusion is.... Jogging is very beneficial for our body. It can make us
healthy, right?
Nindy : Absolutely yes.

Finite clause contain a verb which shows tense. They can be main clauses or subordinate
clauses. Example : Staying active, it keeps muscles and joints strong
Non finite clause contain a verb which does not show tense. We usually use non-finite
verbs only in subordinate clauses. Example : Jogging everyday, it increases energy level.
