Create your tutorial

The transition to Windows 10 has been in some
Win badges and help your
cases a breath of fresh air, and in others, more like
a whiff of landfill. One of the areas that has NOT
been well accepted is the decision to enforce
 community by creating a
tutorial to solve common
problems!
updates whether you want them or not.

While I happen to disagree with this policy, many WRITE A TUTORIAL

think it's a good idea. Regardless of which camp
you're in the fact is this is what Microsoft has
decided is how it's going to be and we have to
learn how to live with it, or get around it. While we
can't stop the update process from happening for
the majority of updates, what we can do is stop it
from updating drivers to versions that deviate
from those that are working, stable and preferred
by YOU to be there. Here's how!

Start by right clicking the start menu button and

selecting Control panel, or navigate to control
panel however you normally would do so. You can
get to the Control Panel quickly, by calling up the
run box with the Win + R shortcut and then typing
"control" and hitting Enter.

Once in control panel, click on "System".

Once the System properties window opens, click

on "Advanced system settings" on the left side of
the window.

In the Advanced system properties window click

on the hardware tab and then click on "Device
installation settings".

Finally, set your options to those shown below.

If you've installed Windows 10 recently or have

updated to the more recent 1151 build update,
your setting will look like this instead.

Save your settings and reboot. That's it. Windows

10 should no longer "automatically" update your
driver settings. Keep in mind this means you will
need to manually install updated drivers for any
hardware that you need or want to run with a
newer release which may require you keeping tabs
with the hardware OEM's product page for any
devices you desire to do so for. If you wish you
may also choose the "always install the best driver
from windows update" option instead of "never
install drivers automatically" if you wish, which will
allow you to perform the windows update right
click search for drivers from within the devices
properties or in device manager, manually, which
you cannot do with the other option enabled. It
will still not "automatically" update drivers without
you manually performing the driver update by
choice.

If you have build 1151 or later, the option to do

that is no longer present so you only have a choice
between automatic updating or no updating. You
can of course still manually install drivers from
each hardware components manufacturer yourself,
which is more highly recommended as a standard
practice anyhow.

Since Windows 10 is brand new, this may be a

frequent and ongoing process for some time. We
can only hope Microsoft will change this automatic
forced update feature to not include drivers at
some point, but I wouldn't bet the house on it.

It might also be a good

idea to take a look at the
following tutorial on Clean
drivers, and perform a
clean installation of your
graphics drivers while
you're at it.
