2ND INTERNAL ASSESSMENT OF THEATER

THE WOMAN IN BLACK

“The Woman in Black” is set in England a play that is meant to scare the audience and have
them watching with bated breath. The story centers around a young solicitor, Arthur Kipps
(Paul Chapman) who writes a play in order to tell of the terrible event that he survived. The
plot involves the solicitor who is summoned to Crythin Gifford, a small market town which is
completely cut off from the mainland. The main character has to attend to the funeral of Mrs.
Alice Drablow, an elderly widow who lived alone in Eel Marsh House. While situated at this
solitary market town he encounters a mysterious woman in black who seems to hunt the
whole town. He find the ‘woman in black’ haunting the house he has to stay in Eel Marsh
House. He has to deal with deceased woman’s paper work and also encounters this
mysterious woman in other areas of the town. Arthur Kipps asks a young Actor (Daniel
Coonan) to help put on this play and describe the horrors he endured during his brief stay.
There are only two actors throughout the play, Paul Chapman and Daniel Coonan. Since
there are only two actors, both have to change roles to a different character and that was the
most challenging part of the performance. They also tried to create the concept of fourth wall
as when they were acting they both try to focus around each other and to pretend like a fourth
wall is existing. But, they also brooked the fourth wall when it was necessary in the play to
do so.

Initially when I use to watch any performance I generally try to find the lie in the
performance. But, now I am better able to connect with the performance to see both the
aspect of a performance that is of lie and that the artist want audience to believe on. The word
space can be interpreted in different way for different persons it can be any place on street,
market shop or bridge side or any place. In this play the space is the stage for them they tried
to explain every part f there performance in that particular space which was very interesting
to see. Also that in this play the sound effect played a very important role to keep the
audience engaged with the performance of the artists. The changing role of the artists and
how just both of them manage the full performance was really interesting to examine.
