It is the sixth most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, the Ruhr
area, Madrid, and Milan.
It is one of the largest metropolises on the Mediterranean Sea, located on the coast
between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, and bounded to the west by
the Serra de Collserola mountain range.
Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural
centres, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, sports, media,
fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the major global
cities.
FAMOUS PLACES TO VISIT
- Sagrada familia:On 19 March 1882, construction of the Sagrada Família began
under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. In 1883, when Villar resigned,
Gaudí took over as chief architect, transforming the project with his
architectural and engineering style, combining Gothic and curvilinear Art
Nouveau forms. Gaudí devoted the remainder of his life to the project, and he is
buried in the crypt. At the time of his death in 1926, less than a quarter of the
project was complete.
Relying solely on private donations, the Sagrada Família's construction
progressed slowly.his work on the building is part of a UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
PARQUE GÜELL
With urbanization in mind, Eusebi Güell assigned the design of the park to Antoni
Gaudí, a renowned architect and the face of Catalan modernism.
The park was built from 1900 to 1914 and was officially opened as a public park in 1926.
In 1984, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site under "Works of Antoni
Gaudí".
PLAZA ESPAÑA
The square was built on a site that had been previously used for public hangings, until the creation of the now
demolished Ciutadella fortress in 1715, where the gallows were moved. It was designed in 1915 and built in 1929 so that it
could be ready to host the 1929 Universal Exposition. The square has been in public use since then.
LA RAMBLA
La Rambla can be crowded, especially during the height of the tourist season. Its
popularity with tourists has affected the character of the street, with a move to
pavement cafes and souvenir kiosks. It has also suffered from the attention of
pickpockets. The Spanish poet Federico García Lorca once said that La Rambla was "the

In 1984, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Since 2013 it has been the
headquarters of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera which manages the visit to the
building exhibitions and other cultural and educative activities at Casa Milà.
