1. What was the study all about? What were the main
phenomena, concepts, or constructs under investigation?
Identify the independent and dependent variables as
applicable?
- This study aims to find services most effective in helping people
with mental illnesses find and keep employment and potentially
avoid application for disability cash benefit programs, and how
these services are to be funded. Upon further investigation, the
researchers have discovered supported employment (SE), which is
a strategy for helping people with disabilities participate in the labor
market, in a job of their choosing, with professional support. Their
services adhere to a full set of evidence-based principles, including
a focus on competitive employment in the community, rapid job
search, adherence to client preferences, integration of mental
health and employment services, and time-unlimited individualized
support after job placement.
Independent Variable(s): Type of services involving with mental
illness
Dependent Variable(s): People with mental illness who are at risk of
long-term unemployment

2. What type of research was this-- quantitative or qualitative?

The type of research used is qualitative, based on the data collected
through interviews and focus groups, its subjectivity and its expression
as words and not numbers.

3. What is the research design used for this particular study?

- Grounded Theory research design was used particularly for this
study since the researcher formulated a constant comparative
analysis and transcribed and examined the data for content
immediately following data collection.

4. How long did the study took to complete?

- As it was stated, the number of years of evidence to summarize
their article was roughly 20.

5. What are the findings of the study? Based on these finding,

what level of evidence is produced?
- They have identified interventions that support employment for
individuals who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis; at risk
of job loss; and those who are, or are at risk of becoming, long-
term users of mental health services who are newly or not yet
enrolled in SSA disability programs. SE (Supplemented
Employment), appears to be effective in helping individuals who
vary in characteristics achieve higher rates of competitive
employment compared to those in control groups who have the
same characteristics (age, gender, diagnosis or education level)
Furthermore, evidence on SE has mixed success at improving job
retention and earnings.
- The level of evidence produced is Critically Appraised Topic. This
study is a short summary of evidence on the topic for “Preventing
Unemployment and Disability Benefit Receipt among People with
Mental Illness” and is usually focused around the clinical question,
however the review has several limitations, which includes no
evaluation for each study’s methodology, no usage of an instrument
(such as the Cochrane AMSTAR tool) to determine the quality of
systematic reviews used in this study, the inclusion of studies even
if possible threats to internal validity existed, and in some cases,
the lack of a comparison group or data demonstrating group
equivalence.
