and Mr. Dave Santhirasegaran. All English teachers
of SK Felda Ulu

how to overcome problems incurred by the teachers and pupils. As
he mentioned, most of the UPSR’s writing focus on postcard, emails,
informal letters, narrative, process and procedures; and descriptive.
As he goes on with the slides, the most relatable to SK Felda Ulu
Tebrau’s pupils are;

i. Lack of structured reading or active reading. Pupils tend to

ignore English literature.
ii. The teachers focus on grammar drills whereas writing
strategies are seldom taught due to size of the class and
time constrains.
iii. Pupils lack of exposure to the usage of English.
iv. Pupils lack the ability to generate ideas of their own
without the guidance by teacher.
v. Pupils struggle with mother tongue interference in
speaking and writing.

Based on his finding while comparing education system in Malaysia

and Singapore is that, teachers in Malaysia tend to focus on product
writing instead of process writing. The difference between these two
methods are

Process writing Product writing

 Text as a resource for  Imitate model text;
comparison;  Organisation of ideas are
 Ideas as starting point more important than
more than one draft; ideas themselves;
 More global. Focus on  One draft;
purpose, theme, text  Features highlighted
type i.e. reader is including controlled
emphasized practice;
 Collaborative;  Individual writing;
 Emphasis on creative  Emphasis on end
process. product.

Mr. Dave stated that, it is crucial for the teachers to articulate the
process writing of creative writing than product writing. This is
because, the pupils’ ability to adapt and adopt the writing is
depending on how they expend their vocabulary. Therefore, it is
importance for the teachers to teach the process instead of
empathizing the end product of static writing.

Among the importance of creative writing are;

i. To entertain;
ii. To foster artistic expression;
iii. To explore the functions and values of writing;
iv. To stimulate imagination;
v. To clarify thinking;
vi. To search for identity (in writing); and
vii. To learn to read and write.

So, what is process writing? It is a writing process that tend to focus

more on the varied classroom activities i.e. brainstorming, group
discussion, re-writing, mind mapping and expending vocabulary.
