GRADED ACTIVITY 2

Question: There are natural sources of matter and objects that emit their own light, Research
5 samples of naturally occurring objects or matter that emit their own light, attach a picture of
that matter or object, describe the name of the object or matter and explain how such light is
generated.

1.

a.) Name of Object/Matter: Bioluminescent Planktons

b.) How Light is generated: Light is produced from a chemical reaction called
chemiluminescence. Chemicals in the plankton termed luciferins produces the light
which is produced by a series of oxidation reactions set off by a catalyst called
luciferase.

2.

a.) Name of Object/Matter: Aurorae

b.) How Light is generated: Light is generated through energetic electrically charged
particles that are mostly electrons that accelerate along the earth’s magnetic field
lines into the upper atmosphere. They collide with gas atoms, causing the atoms to
emit or give off light in the skies.
3.

a.) Name of Object/Matter: Čerenkov Radiation

b.) How Light is generated: Light is produced when charged particles pass through an
optically transparent dielectric medium at speeds greater than the phase velocity of
light in that specific medium.

4.

a.) Name of Object/Matter: Neon Lights

b.) How Light is generated: Neon gas is filled inside the neon light tube. It then ionizes
when a high voltage current is applied to the electrodes and electrons flow through
the gas which excites the neon atoms and cause them to emit light that we can see.

5.

a.) Name of Object/Matter: Organic LEDs or OLEDs

b.) How Light is generated: OLEDs emit light in a similar manner to LEDs, through a
process called electrophosphorescence. When this happens, the electron gives up
energy in the form of a photon of light. The OLED emits individual light. The color of
the light depends on the type of organic molecule that is in the emissive layer.
