Brinell Hardness Test.
Abstract:
In this experiment we need to introduce the principles of indentation
hardness testing. Emphasizing the limitations and significance of the
results.

Introduction:
Hardness is generally considered as resistance to penetration. The
harder the materials, the greater the resistance to penetration.
Hardness is directly related to the mechanical properties of the
material. Factors influencing hardness include microstructure, grain
size, strain hardening, etc. Generally, as hardness increase so does yield
strength and ultimate tensile strength (UTC), thus specifications often
require the results of hardness tests rather than tensile tests. The most
popular methods are Brinell, Vickers and Rockwell hardness tests for
metals and alloys.

Theory:
In this test we use Brinell equation.

Experimental apparent:
We use in this experiment different materials . The universal testing machine
formed by four column frame, hydraulic ram, reservoir of oil, hand operated
pump, strain gauge force sensor, connection box, digital load meter and the
material tested.
Test procedure:
1. We use one of the specimens kit.
2. Connect up all digital sensor.
3. Use your pump to lower the ram .
4. Draw a table of results.
5. Fit the Brinell indenter to the upper part of the compression test area.
6. Put your test specimen centrally test area . if necessary, level hold the
loading platform.
7. Fit the guard.
8. Set the digital load meter to zero and set the peak load function.
9. Lower the ram and remove the guard.
10.Use the magnifying glass and its measurement scale to find the diameter of
the indentation.

Results:
We found that the maximal force is equal to 16.8x 10^3=16800 N, and the
displacement is equal to 0.44 mm.

Data Analysis:
We calculate the Brinell hardness number which equal to 1215.36 HB.

Conclusion:
In general, the hardness of copper ranges between 20 and 1300 HB. The
calculated the value (1215.36 HB) is within this range so it can be acceptable.
