world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. However, the mission
statement doesn’t use the word “search”. Instead, Google says it wants to “organize”
information. Google was the brainchild of two Stanford University graduate students. Larry
Page and Sergey Brin. Their first collaboration in 1996, was a simple search engine called
BackRub. The name “Google” actually is a play on the words of “googol”. Googol is the digit
1 followed by 100 zeroes. By 1998, Larry and Sergey found an investor in the form of Andy
Bechtolsheim, one of the founders of Sun Microsystems. He wrote a check for $100,000 and
Google, Inc. was born. In 1999, Google moved from its humble garage to a real office in
Palo Alto. At that time, Google had a whole of eight employees.
Google introduced AdWords, a self-service program for creating online ad
campaigns. In 2002, Google started further helping businesses with its Google Search and
added cost-per-click pricing to its Adwords. In 2003, Google announced Google Adsense.

on the stock market. Google launched Google Maps and Google Earth in 2005. In 2006,
