DUGAYO, KYLE MIGUEL BSME 3-A E-WATCH 09/16/2020

1. On your own understanding, what must be taken into consideration in carrying out an
engineering watch?

Based on my own understanding, In carrying out an engineering watch, the following must be taken
into consideration: The type of ship and the type and condition of the machinery; the adequate
supervision, at all times, of machinery affecting the safe operation of the ship; any special modes of
operation dictated by conditions such as the state of weather, ice conditions, polluted water, shallow
water, emergency conditions, damage containment or pollution abatement; the qualifications and
experience of the engineering watch; the safety of life, ship, cargo and port, and protection of the
environment; the observance of international, national and local regulations; the requirements for safe
operation of the ship.

2. What are the important things that a watch keeper should be familiar to ensure his safety in
case of emergency in the engine room?

To ensure his safety in case of emergency in the engine room, a watch keeper should be familiar of
the following: the use of appropriate internal communication systems; the escape routes from
machinery spaces; the engine room alarm systems and be able to distinguish between the various
alarms, with special reference to the fire-extinguishing media alarm; the number, location and types
of fire-fighting equipment and damage control gear in the machinery spaces, together with their use
and the various safety precautions to be observed.

3. Explain the importance of the following in engine Watch keeping:

A. Wearing of PPE - PPE is equipment that will protect watch keepers against health or safety risks
on the job. The purpose is to reduce watch keeper’s exposure to hazards when engineering and
administrative controls are not feasible or effective to reduce these risks to acceptable levels. These
hazard risks can be anything from wet floors to falling debris and everything in between.

B. Carrying of torch lamps - In case of a power outage, the flashlight can instantly save the situation.
No matter whether that happens while you are at watch keeping duty or not, having a torch lamp with
you can be a life savior as you can use it to send signals about your location, and you can see your way
out of the situation.

C. Maintaining bodily functions – Watch keepers who are fit are more confident. Being fit to work
gives watch keepers the feeling that they're doing what they're supposed to be doing. This creates a
sense of confidence, which allows them to set higher goals and strive for excellence. Since they don't
settle for less than meeting their goals, they are very successful. As the saying goes, “Healthy workers
are more motivated to stay in work, recover from sickness quicker and are at less risk of long term
illness”.

D. Being awake and conscious - Sleeping while on duty is such an important issue that it is
addressed in the watch keeping handbook in most vessels. Concerns that watch keepers have may
include the lack of productivity, the unprofessional appearance, and danger that may occur when the
employee's duties involve watching to prevent a hazardous situation.
