A. COLLECTION AND PRESENTATION OF STATISTICAL DATA

1. To enable the student to collect and present statistical information.


Students should be able:

1.1 Collect and group statistical data.


1.2 Tabulate statistical data.
1.3 Draw pie charts, histograms, frequency curves and ogive.
1.4 Calculate and interpret percentiles.
1.5 Define dispersion.
1.6 Calculate and interpret.

B. THEORY OF PROBABILITY

2. To enable the student understand the theory of probability and be able


to solve some problems involving probability.

2.1 LAW OF PROBABILITY

a) To understand, interpret and apply the laws of


probability.

b) Mutually exclusive events

To interpret and solve problems involving mutually


exclusive events.

c) Independent events

- To interpret and solve some problems involving


independent events.

d) Bayes law

- To interpret and apply Bayes Theorems to solve


probability problems.

2.3 a) Binomial distribution: student should be able

(i) To interpret and use the binomial formula.


(ii) Solve problems involving Binomial
probabilities.
(iii) State the conditions under which a binomial
distribution can be applied.

b) Normal distribution: student should be able to:

(i) Interpret the normal distribution.


(ii) State the conditions under which a normal
distribution would apply.
(iii) Solve problems involved Normal distribution
probabilities using charts.

c) Poisson Distribution

To enable student to:

(i) interpret the Poisson distribution


(ii) state the conditions under which a poisson
distribution would apply.
(iii) Solve some problems involving a Poisson
distribution probability.

d) Probability distribution of continuous variable

3. To enable the students to understand some sampling techniques and be


able to calculate some sample parameters. Student should be able to.

3.1 Outline sampling methods


3.2 Interpret and use the central limit theorem.
3.3 Estimate the population mean from sample mean.
3.4 Determine confidence limits for population proportion from
means of large samples.

a) Outline the objectives of hypothesis testing.

5. Student should be able to:

5.1 Understand the nature of a time series.

5.2 Outline the factors affecting a time series.

5.3 Decompose a time series by use of moving average and


calculate seasonal variation index.

5.4 Deseasonalisation

5.5 Index Numbers.

a) Interpret the practical application of index numbers.

b) Calculate simple aggregative index numbers.

c) To compute.

(i) Laspeyre`s index numbers.

(ii) Paasche`s index numbers

(iii) Fisher’s ideal index number.

* Other methods / index numbers may be mentioned but


will not be examined.
