STATIC INDETERMINACY

Structure is STATICALLY INDETERMINATE if number of independent reaction components are greater


than the number of equilibrium equations.

Static indeterminacy can also be defined as the number of reactions that are more than the requirement
of maintaining stability. These excess reactions are called redundant because they are unnecessary as
for as the stability of structure is concerned.

Consider the Figure 1. It is statically indeterminate by degree three as it has six independent unknown
reactions as compared to three equilibrium-equations available to us. The beam also has three excess
reactions, which means the beams requires only three reactions to make it externally stable.
