The Invention of Basketball


James Naismith was born in 1861, in Canada. James loved playing
games as a child and, as he grew older, he was a good athlete. He
moved to the USA and became a PE teacher in a boys’ school. One
cold winter, he had a class of quite naughty boys, who were very lively.
It was too cold to do PE outside so James tried
to find ways to keep the boys busy indoors.
He invented the game of basketball in 1891.
The boys loved the game!
Basketball became an Olympic sport in 1935 and
is one of the most popular sports in the world.
It is played by more than 300 million people worldwide!
