Downstrums
Three - Four Time are played "on Four - Four Time
the beat",
1 + 2 + 3 + meaning we 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
downstrum the
moment the beat
number is
counted.
Upstrums are
played "off the
1 + 2 + 3 + beat", meaning 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
we upstrum in
between the
beats on the
"and" of the beat.
Strum patterns
1 + 2 + 3 + are usually a 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
mixture of
downstrums and
upstrums.

Worksheet 11
Seventh Chords
So far, we have learned about major chords and minor
chords. The only difference between them is the half-step (or
one fret) difference in their thirds. But the world of chords goes
far beyond just 3 stacked notes - we can add more! Let's take a
look.
C7 Chord
Look at this new chord, the (4 Stacked Notes)
C7. Since the root the C
note, it makes it really easy
to identify what notes will be
the third, fifth, and seventh.
Why? Because the third in C E G B♭
the C7 chord (E) is the 3 (or 1 3 5 ♭7
mi) in the scale. The fifth in
the C7 chord (G), is the 5 (or
sol) in the scale. Notice the 7 Seventh
has a♭symbol by it - Fifth
indicating that this is a minor

Worksheet 12
The Key to Understanding Keys
Box 1 contains the
scale that we had at
the beginning of the
course. It is the key
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
1
of C, since "do", or "1"
is the note "C". do re mi fa sol la ti do
C D E F G A B C
Box 2 places our "1",
or our "do" on a new
note. Instead of "do"
being the note "C", it
is now the note "G".
Whenever we change 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
keys (change "do"), we
get "accidentals", or
notes that need to be
2 do re mi fa sol la ti do
G A B C D E F# G
modified with a sharp
(#) or flat (♭) symbol.
Box 3 inserts a "key
signature" onto the 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
staff so that we don't
have to look at the
ugly accidental.
3 do re mi fa sol la ti do
G A B C D E F# G
Here is another scale,
only this time it is in
the key of D. Notice
we have two sharps
(#) in the key 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1
signature now,
meaning we don't
need any accidentals
4 do re mi fa sol la ti do
D E F# G A B D
by the F notes or C
notes on the staff.
