Why the hell did i make this “book”?
I like to keep myself occupied and i like to have a“project” going, sorting and collecting.
After taking time off from work, because anxiety/panic/depressing fuckup, i had alot of time
on my hand, and i like to collect old MOC TMNT figures, so i thought, why the hell not.
The book is made from “google” pictures and transcripts (copy/paste) rewritten or directly
copied from the net. I am not a professional designer and i suck in english grammar.
That is the one and original factor of why i use the cheap cut&paste on much of the
information in the book (or, thats what i tell myself anyway).
That beeing said, i did my very best to make this book with respect for the people.
As the book is pure transcript on much of the content in the book,
you may share the pdf freely if you want.
If you are happy with the book then please donate some money to some of the web-sites
that is stated in the refrence page, as they are my main information source, and the book
would be pretty barren without their websites for using facts and pictures.
If you are annoyed, (or the mentioned website, and is pissed i stole your content without
consent) send an email to me: sennep@hotmail.com
and i will make changes to your wishes.

How to collect TMNT Figures
The very first thing you should know are; do you less you find an unbeatable bargain. This will help
want to collect loose figures, carded figures or mint you to more easily manage your collection.
and unpunched carded figures.
Join forum and make connections, look through
Set goals for your collection. Do you want to collect ebay and get a feel for what makes a good price for a
every Ninja Turtle action figure or only certain ones? certain figure. Be wary of the BuyItNow ebay button
Either way it is helpful to prioritize what figures or and the description of the figure. Look carefully at
sets you want to buy first. Stick to your priorities un- the pictures included in the auction.
Web Shops
There are many, many toy web-shops out there. I can not recommend neither of these, as i have not used any of
them before. You should always look for reviews and information before you give them your credit information.
Paypal is usually the safest route to take. Always remember to be vigilant. The web-sites i present here, have
either a good collection of merchandise, good prices, or both. Buying from a web-site opposed to an auction site
or a forum seller has the advantage of often beeing more user-friendly. If you get a damaged item, a shop is more
likely to give you a refund oppoused to an ebay seller, but not always. The prices are often somewhat higher on the
shops, as they are more aware of the market price. Collecting TMNT at the moment, is still fairly cheap opposed
to other merchandise that is popular to collect.
Dallas VintageToys
Web-site: dallasvintagetoys.com
A rather large toy store with many different toy lines. Somewhat small
vintage TMNT collection. Prices are also a little high. The web-site is nice
looking and easy to browse through.

split a roughly $200 profit.
Although the comic was meant to be a “one-shot,” a
single issue, self-contained story, they realized they
might be on to something. So, in January 1985, they
completed issue #2 and quickly received orders for
15,000 copies, which was so successful that distribu-
tors demanded 30,000 reprints of #1, and even more
of a second print of #2. #3 fetched orders totaling
50,000 copies, and sales continued to climb, peaking
at issue #8, which sold 135,000 copies thanks to a
guest appearance by Dave Sim’s character Cerebus,
a barbarian aardvark.
The first issue of the comic originally sold for $1.50.
But if you’re looking for a first-print copy of TMNT
#1 today, it’ll cost you in the neighborhood of $2,500
- $4,000.

The Pop up display
The figures came with a Pop Up Display inside.
They can easily be recognised by the sticker on the
front. Though, some packages came with the Pop
Up display sticker on the Bubble, but the Pop Up
itself wasn’t placed inside. The Pop Up Display is a
picture on a piece of cardboard, where you can stand
it up. The pictures was a image of a different charac-
ter, usually an enemy of the figure, with a little story
and a backdrop of a scene. The Pop Up display have
a higher value than the non Pop Up version. Usually
selling more than $50 each on eBay.

Re-Releases and changes
VaughnMichael@thetechnodrome.com
1992
1st. version
The figures came with a generic looking package
and a pizza back. These cards are often called “Blue
Cards” or “pizza back Card”.
1993
2nd. version
These cards were still using the old punch hanging
method and old pizza back from the 1992 rereleases,
but this is when the new front starts and this is right
before figure started coming with collector cards.
1993
3rd. version
These packages were still using the old punch hang-
ing method. The figure came with a generic collector
card.
16 7.
1993
4th version
These packages were strictly used for the Shogun
figures first release. It uses the genric 1992 card back
again just like the last version and does not yet have
the Shogun figures listed on the back. The only sho-
gun figures that came with this, are the four turtles,
splinter, & april. The generic looking collector cards
have purple color, unlike the rest of the series that
have yellow.
1994
5th version
The blister card has now switched to the modern
hanger type. The back of the box has added more
figures to the list and now acknowledges the collec-
tor card.
1994
6th version
This package is pretty much like like the third but
you will notice they changed the collector cards to a
better design.
7. 17
1994
7th version
This is only for the “Warriors of the forgotten sew-
er”. The only changes are the front box art, specific
to this series and the back of the box has an addition
of Gatekeeper Rocksteady. It also shows the Statue
and comic instead of a collector card.
1994
8th version
This adds two characters to the back of the box; Ro-
botic Foot Soldier and Shogun Triceraton. Note that
the image of shogun splinter has changed.
1994
9th version
This card is only for shogun shoate.
18 7.
1994
10th version
On this version, no characters have been added but
three characters; Triceraton, Usagi and Space Usagi
have been taken off the back. This card may have
only been used for Robotic foot soldier and Shogun
Triceraton.
1994
11th version
The only addition on this card is krang’s android
body on the back of the card. The card is only set up
this way for this figure.
1994
12th version
This version is the last before the switch to the col-
lector coins. The slogan on the back also changes
with this blister card back change to “It’s a race to
see who can collect the most!”, and a decent amount
of new toys are added to the back including; Crea-
ture Leo, Invisble Mike, Bride April, Mutant Raph,
all four Apollo 11 turtles, four undercover turtles
among others are added to the back of the card.
7. 19
1994
13th version
This is when it starts to get tricky with the box
changes. These ones came with both second edition
collector cards and a coin, but the front has a collec-
tor card only sticker on the front and the back only
shows it coming with a collector card.
1994
14th version
Pretty much the same as the before one, only this
version has a collector coin sticker on the front of
the blister, but the back still only shows a collector
card.
1995
15th versions
Collector cards are no longer being released and
only collector coins come with the figures.
20 7.
1995
16th versions
These are exclusive to the adventure series, which
has it’s own single collector coin. A huge amount of
characters are now gone from the back of the box
and a few new ones have been added. Also, two
characters made it over to the bad guys side; Geng-
his frog and Sergeant bananas (which never got rere-
leased). A few figures are listed that never got rere-
leased; Crazy Cowboy Don, Green Barrette Raph,
Delta Team Don (who did get rereleased in 1999),
Lieutenant Leo, Navy Seal Mike, & Head Droppin’
Raph (which did not get rereleased until the ninja
power line in 1996). The slogan also changes.
1995
17th version
This release is almost like the last one, but was made
for the two Sumo Turtles, Raph and Mike. The back
is about the same, but with a inclusion of the two
sumo Turtles and Metal Head Mike.
1995
18th version
This is for the release of the Warrior Figures and
the last new releases of the line. The card is much
like version 16, but without the sumo turtles and a
addision of; Warrior Winged Leo and don, warrior
metalhead michaelangelo, Warrior Robotic Rock-
steady, Warrior Robotic Bebop (never released),
Warrior Rahzar with fur (never released) and War-
rior Chrome dome.
7. 21
1995
19th version
This version was pretty much just for Warrior Metal-
head Michaelangelo. While the front card and name
sticker call him by this you may notice he do not
have his coin and the back makes note of this by
changing the accessories section and the bio section
to that of the first Metalhead figure but using the im-
age of Warrior Metalhead Mike.) There are two box
variants of this figure.
1995
20th version
In 1995, a large number of figures had been rere-
leased to Wal-mart stores with the purple warning
lable in the upper left hand corner of the blister card.
The backs to these figures used the 1994 rereleases
back but the only change is. that there is no collec-
tor cards in the accessories section and the date has
been changed to 1995 in the information.
1996
1st version
Playmates changes things up a bit and rereleases
some of the old mutations and other turtle figures for
the 10th anniversary. They switch the front to that
of the old sewer background from the 1990 figures
and the back of the blister card is a new generic one.
The series includes: Mutations, Pizza Tossin’, Head-
droppin’, Sewer Spitting, & Ninja Action.
22 7.
1996
2nd version
This version keeps the generic insert in the front of
the blister, gains a sticker saying what it does on the
blister. The back remains exactly the same with no
new figures added.
1996
3rd version
This is about the same as the second version but with
a new insert using old art or photos infront of the
blister. The back is the same as it’s been from the
start.
1996
4th version
The box front remains the same, the blister keeps
the new paper inserts from version 3 but loses the
sticker, in this last release of the Ninja Power se-
ries we get the addition of 4 more characters; Kung
Fu Donatello, Michaelangelo, Rocksteady and Rap-
hael. The blister card for this last release of the Ninja
Powers changes a bit to make way for these four fig-
ures and a logo is added for Playmates website.
7. 23
1998
We began to see rereleases again for the last time
in small shipments to KB Toys and Biglots. These
rereleases have a Green warning label on the front
of the blister card and a generic back that looks like
the very first release of the turtles figures. But unlike
the first releases, some of these do not have color
clip and collect cards. The other way to tell these are
rereleases besides the obvious generic 1994 blister
card front and the green warning lable is the Play-
mates website logo on the back of the blister card.
1999
Playmates rereleases it’s last batch of figures at KB
Toys & Big Lots stores. The packages are the same
as the 1998 series of rereleases, but the date on the
back says 1999. Nothing else has changed. The only
odd thing about these last issues is that it’s the only
time some of these figures had ever been rereleased.
24 7.
This is the main portion of the book. It consist of
every figure for each year. Each figure has a two
page display, where on the second page, it consist
of the text that came with the potrait of the char-
acter and pictures of variants or different packages.
And in some cases, a small fact about the characters
TV appearances or another picture of the figure. The
first page has a picture of the figure and the pack-
age it came in, with information about the toy-line
and the stock number, among other. The list regard-
ing the value of the figures should and must, not be
taken literally, and only used as a jumping off point
or as a refrence. The value is not set in stone and
figures may double or half in value, depending on
buyers interest.

Leonardo
In the Mirage/Image Comics, all four turtles wear red bandan-
as, but in other versions, he wears a blue bandana. His signature
weapons are two ninjato. Throughout the various media, he is
often depicted as the eldest and leader of the four turtles, as well
as the most disciplined. He is named after Leonardo da Vinci.
The 1987 cartoon, Leonardo is voice by Cam Clarke. In the live
action 2014 movie, he is voice by Johnny Knoxville.
In the Mirage Comic, Leonardo has a alternate dimension super-
hero counterpart, named Graviturtle who has the power to fly us-
ing his special whip, and wears a purple cape with a red ‘G’ on
the back.

Like his Florentine namesake, Leonardo is the perfect Turtle. In the lid-

and Splinter’s star pupil.
Because of his keen eyesight and sensitive hearing, Leonardo is ex-
tremely well-balanced, which makes him more skillful when wielding his ever
flashing katana blades. No matter how dangerous the situation, Leo doesn’t
mind sticking his neck out. His primary objective in life: cut Shredder down to

Donatello
Donatello, often shortened to Don, Donny or Donnie, is co-crea-
tor Peter Laird’s favorite Turtle.
His primary signature weapon is his effective bō staff. In all
media, he is depicted as the smartest of the four turtles. Donnie
often speaks in technobabble with a natural aptitude for science
and technology. He is named after the Italian sculptor Donatello.
in the early Mirage stories he is depicted as second-in-command.
In the first issue, he is the one that killed the Shredder by knock-
ing him and his grenade off the roof.
In the Image Comics incarnation of the TMNT, he became a
cyborg after his body was partially destroyed.

Raphael
Raphael wields twin sai as his primary weapon. He is generally
the most likely to experience extremes of emotion, and is usually
depicted as being aggressive, sullen, maddened, and rebellious.
The origin of Raphael’s anger is not always fully explored, but in
some incarnations appears to stem partly from the realization that
they are the only creatures of their kind and ultimately alone. He
also has a somewhat turbulent relationship with his older brother
Leonardo because Leonardo is seen as the group’s leader. Rap-
hael is named after the 16th-century Italian painter Raphael.
In 2011 Raphael placed 23rd on IGN’s Top 100 Comic Book He-
roes, a list that did not feature any of his brothers.

Michaelangelo
Michelangelo, Mike or Mikey`s are often depicted as more fun-
loving than his brothers. Michelangelo was given a much bigger
role in the 1987 cartoon series, directed at a younger audience,
than in the more serious original comic books which was aimed
at an older audience. He often coins most of their catchphrases,
such as “Cowabunga!”. Like all of the brothers, he is named after
a Renaissance artist; in this case, he is named after Michelangelo
Buonarroti.
The character’s name was originally misspelled as “Michaelange-
lo”, with an additional “a”. This misspelling had stuck until 2001
with Volume 4 of the comic series from Mirage Studios, when the
spelling was officially changed to “Michelangelo”.

Splinter
Splinter is portrayed as wise, intelligent, and a skilled “elderly
martial arts master”. He is nearly always calm and, even when an-
gry, refrains from raising his voice. He is the quintessential calm,
all-knowing wise master of all martial arts.
Splinter has three origin stories, and which one is used depends
on the medium. In the original Mirage comic version of the tale,
he was Hamato Yoshi’s pet, in others he is Hamato Yoshi himself,
but always having been mutated into the form of a man-sized rat.
In the 2014 film he is a mutated rat who learned Ninjutsu from a
book he found in the sewer.

Shredder
The 1988 Shredder figure has seen continual release until about
1995. The first Shredder reissue was in 1998, followed 8 years
later in 2010 and finally 2013. The version issued in 1998 is al-
most identical to that of the original ‘88 release with the exception
of a 1998 date stamp on his backside. The 2010 version was for
the 25th Anniversary reissue line and featured a slightly different
leg sculpt. This variation was also packaged with the mini-Krang
figure that originally carded with 1994’s Krang’s Android Body.
The 2013 version is identical to the 2010 reissue with the only
noticable difference being in paint quality and larger peg holes in
the feet. This is presumably so the figure can be used with current
TMNT vehicles and playsets.

Foot Soldier
Foot Ninja or Foot Soldiers, are a band of Ninjutsu-trained thugs
that are in the employ of The Foot Clan, often under the command
of The Shredder or Karai. While in most incarnations they are
human, some versions depict them as robots, as seen in the 1987
cartoon show.
The Foot Clan was originally a parody of the criminal ninja clan
the Hand in the Daredevil comics. In addition to the obvious sim-
ilarity in their names, both clans originate from Feudal Japan,
practice ninjutsu and black magic.
Foot Soldier figures was always issued with a hard head, unlike
most figures released during the first year.

Rocksteady and Bebop were designed by Kevin Eastman and Pe-

Playmates, as they wanted more characters to release. They were
added into the show and given names, personalities and an origin

“put more mutants in the series”.
In the 1987 cartoon, Rocksteady was voiced by Cam Clarke (who

later both Bebop and Rocksteady were reissued as KB Toys ex-

Ace Duck
Ace Duck had only a brief a cameo in an episode of the 1987 TV
series. He also had a brief cameo in the 2012 Tv series, as Baxter
Stockman’s 74th attempt to make a mutant army for Shredder. He
only appeared as a picture in the episode “The Lonely Mutation
of Baxter Stockman”. Ace appeared a few times in the Archie
TMNT Adventures comic as a professional wrestler from another
planet, which is a far cry from the pilot occupation of his action
figure.
The earlier releases of the figure lacked a hole on top of his head
and a peg on the inside of his cap to better hold it on, which made
keeping his hat on his head a lot harder.

Casey Jones
Casey first appeared in the Raphael solo issue by Mirage comic,
“Me, Myself and I”. In the Mirage series, Casey is extremely vio-
lent, even more so than Raphael, but he mellows throughout the
course of the series. In Shades of Gray, Casey accidentally kills
a teenager who tried to mug him. The incident sent him into a
drunken spiral, damaging his relationship with April O’Neil. His
initial homicidal tendencies are especially present in his first ap-
pearance, although he never actually murders anyone in that in-
stance. It was revealed by Kevin Eastman that they had intended
for Casey to have become a vigilante because he watched too
many bad cop shows, as opposed to the more overused storyline
where the hero does so after seeing their family murderd.

turned his ambition toward crime-fighting. Modeling himself after his favorite
vigilante cop show, Casey decided to take the law into his own mitts. Outfitted
with castoff sportsgear, Casey challenges every criminal who dares to go out
of bounds. This bat-bearing vigilante fights to rid the world of all bad sports,
including those who would dare steal second base. Casey’s got a score to settle

were mutated and trained by Shredder. They first appeared in the
1987 TV series episode “Invasion of the Punk Frogs”. Genghis

“Super Turtles Dai Pinchi! Saint Tojo!”.
Genghis Frog, followed later by Napoleon Bonafrog, became one

Metalhead was orignally from the 1987 cartoon series. He was
a robotic turtle, created by Krang, and would later served as a
basis for the 2012 character of the same name but with a different
backstory.
His original action figure featured an arm with swappable mecha-
nunchuks, a backpack with scanner and video games, and vac-
metallized detailing. The figure was later re-issued as a roboti-
cized Michealangelo.
A separate character from Mirage comics, named “Metal Head”

Usagi Yojimbo is a comic book series created by Stan Sakai in
1987. The story is set primarily at the beginning of Edo period
of Japan (early 17th century), with anthropomorphic animals re-
placing humans, it features a rabbit ronin, Miyamoto Usagi, who
is partially based on the famous swordsman Miyamoto Musashi.
The series has been awarded 3 Eisner awards.
Usagi appeared several times in the TMNT comic, both of the
animated serie, and the toy line, as a crossover figure. Likewise,
the turtles have appeared in Usagi Yojimbo as well. In his guest
appearances, he is closest to Leonardo, both sharing the same ide-

Baxter Stockman
Dr. Baxter Stockman is a scientist who has appeared in most of
the TMNT related media. In each version, he is depicted as the
creator of the Mousers. Nevertheless, there are several differenc-
es among his various appearances. In the Mirage comic series,
Dr. Stockman was a sociopathic African American scientist “off
in his own world” with no relation to the comic Shredder. In the
1987 TMNT cartoon series and the Archie comics, Stockman was
a misguided white American inventor who works for Shredder.
In the 2003 series, Baxter Stockman is portrayed as he was in the
original Mirage comic series, except that he now has connections
to the Shredder.

General Traag was a recurring character in the 1987 cartoon, as
well as in the Archie comic series and a few video games. The
1987 cartoon version of General Traag was a solid reddish-brown
rock humanoid, much simpler in appearance than his flashier fig-

Krang
Krang’s physical appearance was inspired by the Utroms from the
original TMNT Mirage comic, and in the 2003 animated series
there is an Utrom named Krang. However, in the 1987 cartoon,
Krang is not stated to be an Utrom. The Utroms are naturally
brain-like aliens, while in the first animated series Krang claims
to be an alien who has been stripped of his body and left with
only his brain. It is never stated what kind of body he had. When
he cloned himself in “Invasion of the Krangazoids”, his clones,
though initially brain-creatures like himself, continued develop-
ing until they had complete bodies, leading to the thought that
Krang’s true form is a large reptilian creature.

Leatherhead was created in 1987 by Mirage Studios artist Ryan
Brown. He is a mutated, anthropomorphic alligator and appears
in numerous TMNT versions.
In his first appearance, the 1987 cartoon, the Punk Frogs, who had
also been mutated by the same swamp, find themselves enslaved
by Leatherhead, until he was captured by the Turtles who came
to save the frogs. In the Mirage comic, Leatherhead was nothing
more than an infant alligator who was found by a pair of TCRI
Utroms who decided to bring the creature to their headquarters.
During his stay with the Utroms, Leatherhead was exposed to
Mutagen which caused him to mutate into a humanoid and intel-

Rat King
The Rat King remains one of the more enigmatic characters in
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with various appearances depict-
ing him as either a villain, a neutral character and even an ally
of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Rat King has apparent tel-
epathic influence over rats, with his only other consistent power
being his immense strength (which varies throughout incarna-
tions of the character).
In Archie Comics, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures
series, the Rat King is given the name Lord Ha’ntaan. The Rat

The figure has wind-up swimming legs for kids to use in the bath-

could be wound up to make him kick. He had a mechanism inside
his torse that make his hips move in a swimming motion. His
ankles also have articulation that allows him to stand normally or
look like he is swimming. The figure came with two accessories.
One was a sewer-scuba jet which was a large grayish-blue missile

Breakfightin’ Raphael
In the earliest Mirage Comics, Raphael was the most violent tur-
tle and had a tendency for going berserk either in battle or when
his temper flared up. He has a somewhat cynical and sarcastic
sense of humor. Raphael mellowed somewhat as the series went
on, possibly a key moment for his character development was
when he allowed Leonardo to go in alone to defeat The Shredder
after nearly being killed by the Foot Elite.
Breakfightin’ Raphael has a wind-up action feature that makes
him “break dance”, or spin, on a blue gyro disc accessory. On the
back of his shell, a little port is present, where the gyro disc can
be attached to give him his spinning action. His two weapons can
be held in his hands or attached to his feet to fight while spinning.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Michaelangelo
In the Mirage Comic, Michelangelo was depicted as fun-loving,
carefree, and, while not as aggressive as Raphael, always ready
to fight.
Rock ‘N Roll Michaelangelo`s wind-up action features was that
his right arm would spin 360 degrees below the wrist allowing
him to spin his weapons around. He also came with three bright
green weapons. On the figure’s side there is a little knob, dis-
guised as a pocket on his belt, that is used to wind-up Michae-
langelo’s wrist. The head sculpt featured Mikey’s tongue sticking
out from between his smiling lips, which somewhat captured his
cartoon personality.

Wacky Walkin` Mouser
In the Mirage Comics the Mousers were originally created by Dr.
Baxter Stockman, under the premise of selling them to the gov-
ernment, to help fight New York City’s Rat problem. However,
their creator used them to steal valuables from bank vaults, to
gain billions through crime, as he believed himself to be smarter
than the authorities.
The Mousers appear in the IDW comics as well, but they were
created there from the outset by Baxter Stockman for military
purposes. They are given the name Mousers, because it is short
for, “Minefield Ordnance Unarming System Enhanced Robots”.

In the 1987 cartoon`s theme song lyrics, Leonardo is said outright
to be the leader of the TMNT, and there is little disputing this; his
orders are usually followed, and he is a very serious do-gooder

of the TMNT mythos where Leonardo does not have his sibling
rivalry with Raphael.

Giant Raphael
Raphael’s personality in the 1987 animated series deviates the
most from all other incarnations. The show’s theme song states
that Raphael is “cool, but crude”, as opposed to being angry and
sullen as in other versions. His toned-down attitude was mostly
due to the fact that this series was based primarily on humor.
Raphael is a sarcastic wise-guy, and supplies comic relief along-
side Michelangelo, whose humor is usually attributed to his
ignorance and spaciness, whereas Raphael is more sarcastic and
witty.

Giant Michaelangelo
Michelangelo’s persona became strongly established in the 1987
animated series. He was often seen as a “Party Dude”, which,
though accurate in the 1987 series, accounts for only part of his
personality otherwise. As the “party dude”, he usually didn’t have
much input in the team’s plans, although he was still just as active
as his brothers. He typically spent much of his time joking and
socializing with other characters. He is most associated with the
“Cowabunga” expression that became a pop culture phenomenon.

In the Archie comics however, Mondo Gecko had started out as
a human skateboarder playing in a local heavy metal band. As
the band practices in Shredder’s former hideout, some of Krang’s
discarded Mutagen merged his DNA with that of his pet gecko.
It was this version of the character whose story was incorporated

Napoleon Bonafrog is one of the Punk Frogs. In order to promote
the two Punk Frogs that got an action figure, Playmates had epi-
sodes with Genghis and Napoleon as solo characters. The Napo-
leon figure looked nothing like his cartoon counterpart. Like the
Turtles, all four Punk Frogs looked identical save for some color-
ing and accessory choices. The Genghis Frog toy already cap-
tured the cartoon look of the Punk Frogs, so to make Napoleon
stand out, Playmates gave him a radically different appearance
and calling him a “toad” in his bio, in spite of his name. In the epi-
sode, “Napoleon Bonafrog: Colossus of the Swamps”, Napoleon
gets transformed into a “monstrous” new version of himself, what
looks like a way of justifying Napoleon’s toy look.

Panda Khan
Li Yang, the Panda Khan is unique in his ties to TMNT lore and
a special, though somewhat elusive ally and friend to the Turtles

Playmates Toys fold, aside from creator’s Dave Garcia and Mon-

also that at some point P.K. was to appear in the original TMNT
cartoon show. This is very similar to the effect of the deal made
with Stan Sakai and the now iconic cross-over history that Usagi
Yojimbo and his friends have had with the TMNT.

Wingnut & Screwloose
Wingnut’s first appearance was actually as a villain and ally of
Shredder in a mini-comic that came with Ralston-Purina’s Teen-
age Mutant Ninja Turtles cereal. Wingnut was also portrayed as
a villain in the 1987 cartoon series, hailing from Dimension X.
His comrade, Screwloose is an alien mosquito, who has also been
presented as both an ally and an antagonist of the Turtles.
The original Wingnut figure was never re-released but it did pre-
sumably come in two different variants. One with dark brown
color on the wings and one with light brown color.

In the 1987 cartoon, Muckman was a garbageman named Gar-
son Grunge, who was mutated into a walking pile of garbage
when Bebop and Rocksteady poured mutagen on him. The ac-
cident also mutated his friend Joe Junkee. They took the names
Muckman and Joe Eyeball . They became allies of the turtles af-
ter realizing that Bebop and Rocksteady caused their mutation.
Muckman was voiced by Townsend Coleman, who also was the
voice of Michelangelo and Krang, among others. Joe Eyeball was
voiced by Rob Paulsen, who was the voice of Raphael.

Mutagen Man
Mutagen was based on a sketch made by Peter Laird for Play-
mates. Laird originally called it “The Unknown” and would be
a mutant crossing between an ape and some kind of insect that
went wrong.
Even though Seymour is really a good guy in the TMNT 1987
cartoon, he is persuaded to steal the Bindex-3 against his own
wishes by Shredder, his toy lists him as a bad guy. Mutagen Man
also appeared in the 2012 series, where he was a overwheight
teenaged fan, named Timothy who, after a mutagen mishap, be-
came the entity known as “Mutagen Man”.

Pizzaface
Pizza Face, or Pizzaface, is a crazy pizza maker and enemy of the
Turtles, whose character was originally invented as part of the
1990 toy line.
In the 2012 TV series, he was named Antonio and was the owner
of the Antonio’s Pizza-Rama food chain, a famous New York City
pizzeria. He was turned into the evil Pizza Face when he was ex-
posed to a canister of mutagen in the second season. Pizza Face
looks like a pepperoni and mushroom pizza with arms, a mouth,
and eyes made of pepperoni.

Scumbug
Scumbug appeared first in the Archie TMNT Adventures comic,
#10, in which he fought the Turtles in the sewers and was later
confronted by Wyrm.
The Scumbug figure has a total of eight points of articulation,
consisting of two ball-jointed hips, swiveling neck, shoulders,
right wrist, & left forearm, and a loosely hinged jaw. The first
seven joints are typical to most of the original TMNT figures, but
Scumbug’s hinge-jointed jaw is what makes him really unique.
The jaw actually serves as an action feature. If you grip Scumbug
by his antennae and quickly move his head from side to side,
his jaw clacks against the collar of his shirt, creating a chattering
sound, like what you might hear from an actual insect.

Slash
Slash was created by Kevin Eastman.
In the 1987 cartoon, Slash is an ordinary turtle that was mutated
by Bebop and Rocksteady. In the 2012 cartoon, Slash was Rap-
haels pet turtle, Spike. He listened to his owner’s angry ranting
about his troubles with his family for the majority of his life, and
also learned ninjutsu by watching Raphael practice in his room.
In “Slash and Destroy”, Spike drinks from a jar of mutagen, mu-
tating into a towering, hulking mutant turtle. He was voiced by
the actor Corey Feldman, who also voiced Donatello in the live
action movie from 1990 and again in the third movie from 1993.

In an attempt to fight fire with fire, Shredder created the perfect Turtle ter-
ror – a ninja nemesis from Dimension X named – Slash. This snarling, snapping
mutant menace is the total opposite of our beloved Turtle teens. He’s a crazed
carnivorous cannibal who only eats tender Turtle tenderloin – even for breakfast!
This anti-Turtle teen slashes his way through the sewers on a maniacal
mission of mass destruction. Armed with his Pyscho Sai and one good eye, Slash
skewers anything that’s good and green. This mad monster hates everything the
Turtles love: pizza, parties and pranks. Allied with Shredder, Slash won’t rest
until he’s devoured our green Teens. His spiked knee and elbow pads and horned
shell keep slash a cut above the rest.

Triceraton
Along with the Fugitoid, the Triceratons were one of the earliest
creations of Mirage Studios, predating the TMNT.
Triceratons are an alien warrior race who resemble anthropomor-
phic triceratops, and usually breathe a mix of nitrogen and sulfur.
Tough and aggressive, they are entirely herbivorous, and have a
high sense of loyalty to their race.
The Triceratons appear in much of the TMNT series, from the
early Mirage comic to 2012 series. The even came as Dark Horse
miniatures, that predates the Playmates toy line.

With the traditional training of the past, Leo’s now ready to pulverize the present.
Watch the Foot fall to their knobby knees when they wage war against this top

Don, the undercover turtle
Undercover Don is one of the few “special edition” turtles to ac-
tually appear in the 1987 cartoon.
The figure has hinge-jointed legs, allowing for only forward and
backward movement. The figures usually have ball-jointed legs.
The figure wears a non-removable trench coat and tucked in the
coat is a non-detachable dagger.
In 1994, Playmates released a undercover figure for all four Tur-
tles as the “Undercover series”.

Sword Slicin’ Leonardo
In the Mirage Comic, Leonardo is depicted as the eldest brother
and the calmest of the four. He never explicitly referred to him-
self as leader in the early stories, except issue #44, “The Violent
Underground”. He is the one to usually take charge of the turtles
when Master Splinter is not present and is often at odds with his
more hot-headed brother, Raphael.
The action feature on the figure has Leonardo’s arm spinning,
giving the “slicing” action.

Slice ‘N Dice Shredder
In the Mirage Comic, Oroku Saki is the younger brother of Oroku
Nagi who had been killed by a fellow ninja Hamato Yoshi in a
feud over a woman named Tang Shen resulting in Yoshi fleeing
with Shen to America. Angry at the death of his older brother,
Saki joined the Foot Clan and trained to be a ninja. He quickly
became one of their deadliest warriors and rose up the ranks and
was chosen to lead the Foot’s American branch. Operating in
New York under the name of “The Shredder”, Saki used the op-
portunity to avenge his brother by killing Yoshi.
The figure got a whole new sculpt, based more on the Mirage ver-
sion of Shredder. The figures hips are swivel instead of the usual

Donatello with Storage Shell
The 1987 animated television series depicts Donatello as a genius
who invents many of the turtles vehicles and equipment including
the Turtle Van, the Turtle Blimp and the Turtle Com. The voice
actor of Donatello in the cartoon, was Barry Gordon with Greg
Berg as the 1989 alternate voice actor.
This was the first of the Storage Shell toy line. The figure could
open the shell where one could store weapons and accessories.
The color scheme on the figure was somewhat lighter, opposed to
the 1988 version. The figure was later reissued with a black belt
variant in 1994.

Because Don’s only got two hands, this roomy reptile relies on his stor-

anything up his sleeve, but check out his back! Don’s got his bo snapped to his
back for easy retrieval. And when the going gets Turtle tough, Don just opens his
back and selects a weapon from his awesome arsenal: a sewer slingshot for the
fast movin’ Foot; a fish knife to scale the Foot down to size; a shark fin hatchet
for hacking hoodlums; two ninja stars – one for each hand; and a killer pizza – the
pizza that slices back!
Don’s the first Turtle to perfect his storage shell. Not only can he hide his
weapon aresenal in his back, but he can also sneak secret sewer stuff past the Foot
Clan. Go ahead, try him out – but don’t be surprised by his tricky Turtle insides!

Vehicles & Accessories
One important factor that Playmates TMNT toys
was, and still is, rather successful, are their eye for
detail. Although, they could go overboard on some
of the figures, most collectors can say that it is one of
their strongest suit. The eye details was also a major
factor in their TMNT vehicles and accessories, often
to the brink of excess.
The first TMNT vehicles came out alongside the
first batch of action figures and would continue to
grow in number with the figures.

Technodrome
The Technodrome vehicle/playset was seen as one of the most
beloved toys in the original release. The outside of the toy is very
accurate to its show appearance, complete with four rolling tank
tread like wheels and a giant eye that can detach from the top.
Much like other toys in the line the major details lied with the
many decals applied to the playset.
There is a number of websites, including the official site for a
time, that document the toy as being released in 1988 with the
first wave of toys. This is false, as the date stamp on the underside
of the base has its copyright date as 1990.
The retail price was $50.

Fan Club Offer Set
This is a card/package variant. These was the first released figures, and came with a
Fan Club Offer, as a white folder paper insert, behind the weapons. Back Of Package
States “Be A Mutant Turtle! Join The Turtle Team Fan Club. See Details Inside” Later,
the same message is written on back of package, but the paper insert was not included.
It is believed that Shredder, Foot Soldier and Splinter also includes as a Fan Club Offer
variant, but this is yet to be confirmed.
After sending in the offer and waiting six to eight weeks, hopefully, the
Fan Club Kit would arrive in an envelope with the comment; “Your Turtle
Force Membership Has Arrived!” in green letters. Included in the kit was a
introductory letter from P.J. Van Egeren, the fan club president, an official
membership card - numbered and signed, a larger, suitable-for-framing ver-
sion, a sticker, a official TMNT bandana and a comic.

1st. Generation Re-Releases (1992)
This is a list of the first generation of reissues that started in 1992. The card has a blue
background and depicts all four turtles. They are often called “Blue Cards” or “Pizza
Back Card” (even though most of the re-releases has a pizza on the back. The figures
presented in the list are the ones that was originally released from 1988 to 1990. The
list may be incomplete.

Turtles Trivia (or just weird shit)
The TMNT license attracted lawsuits. Any property that makes so much money
usually does. Among frivolous lawsuit, the TMNT franchice had it`s share of
controversy. These few pages consist of some weird or fun facts about everyones
favorite turtles and their world(s).

Sewer Turtles
In 1990, some 250,000 turtles were imported into Britain to feed the demand of
young Turtles fans who wanted them as pets. For only a few pounds, kids could
easily buy a small turtle, not knowing that it would grow to be the size of a din-
ner plate. When the kids no longer wanted to take care of the animals, they were
often dumped in rivers and ponds, where they devastated native ecosystems. The
problem became so severe that the Eu-
ropean Union banned the sale of the
most popular breed, red-eared terra-
pins, in 1997.

by: Chris Jenkins@listverse.com
Eastman and Laird were sued for $5 million by Buffalo Bob Smith, host of the
Howdy Doody Show, because he claimed they stole “Cowabunga!” from his pro-
gram. The word was first used as the catchphrase greeting of a Native American
character, named Chief Thunderthud, however it had been adopted by surfers in
the 1960s. After a few months of legal wrangling, Smith settled for $50,000.

K.O. Hitler
In the 1995, Archie comic #64, the turtles meet Adolf Hitler. The five part “Dream-
land” story takes place in the future and features the future versions of the TMNT
in their Cyber Samurai gear. Hitler’s brain powers the Time-Slip Generator. Tak-
ing a robot body, he travels to the past in an effort to locate his past self. During a
scuffle, Hitler Bot is destroyed, and the Hitler of the past attempts to retrieve the
brain, but is knocked out by Future
Raphael. When the Turtles go to leave,
Hitler draws a gun on them. Future Le-
onardo convinces Hitler that they are
demons, and that he is in Hell; since
they already have his soul, they’ve
come for his brain. Hitler puts his gun
to his head, claiming that they will not
take his brain, and pulls the trigger.
In the 1986, Mirage comic #7, the turtles meets an alien race known as the Utroms.
While the cartoon Krang is a violent war lord from Dimension X who has been
separated from his original body, the Utroms were a benevolent race from an-
other planet that crashed to Earth 20 years ago. They peacefully integrated into
American society inside android bodies while working on a way to teleport back
to their home planet. It was during this
research that they lost a canister full of
an experimental substance. This was,
of course, the canister that ended up
mutating the Ninja Turtles in the first
place.

Dead children and a missing arm
In the 1998, Mirage comic #17, the local government warn of an alligator attack,
after two children are found slain and half-eaten in the sewers. Leonardo comes
to the conclusion that Leatherhead may have been responsible. Tracking down
Leatherhead, Leonardo was surprised to find the mutant alligator gagged and
bound. Before he could free Leatherhead, Leonardo was attacked by King Ko-
modo and his Monitor lizard minions,
the actual killers of the children. Leo
fought Komodo and his non-mutated
brethren, and during the fight, he bit
off Leo’s left hand.
Gory Baxter
One episode of the 4Kids cartoon series, “Insane in the Membrane”, was so dark
it was pulled just before it aired in America. The Shredder has tortured scientist
Baxter Stockman by slowly dismembering him. So Stockman creates a clone and
transplants his consciousness into it. However, his new body decomposes, expos-
ing muscle and bone, and he is forced to sew fallen body parts back on.
The episode was later made available
on 4KidsTV’s website.

This book has transcripts and
pictures, taken shamelessly
from the internet, and is about
the history and fitst action fig-
ures of Playmates Teenage Mu-
tant Ninja Turtles. It is made
for me in mind, and maybe to
the somewhat curious collec-
tor of TMNT merchandise. The
book is meant to be the first, in
a series of books covering the
TMNT figures. This book is not
a complete-guide to collecting
vintage TMNT action figures. It
is more like a complete-guide-
light. Hopefully, you find this
book somewhat entertaining
and fun to look at.
